"dunking" help!
    #4481122 - 08/01/05 03:50 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

I need more info on dunking. I read about it but it ins't that clear. do I put the cakes that have the fungis for mushies growing on this in the dunk or what. I'm using a method where you put them in a tuppawear box but I'm looking for getting my shrooms faster. The thing said to wait until the fungi has grown on all sides of the jar then crumble over potting soil with no fertilizers and cover with pottin and vermiculite. what do you do with the cakes after you dunk them and shoud I wait for the jars to be covered all the way if I'm going to dunk them? all help is apprciated!

Yes, your cakes must be fully colonized. You don't need to case (what you were saying about crumbling and covering with vermiculite). You just need to leave them submerged for 12-24 hours, then you can put them in the terrarium as is, or cover them (roll) with moist vermiculite.

it's best to wait til your jars are fully colonized. after they are colonized you dunk, some people say 24hrs, some say 12. i dunked my cakes in the fridge for 12hrs, it seemed to work fine, others say that you should dunk in room temp (i haven't tried this way). all cakes should be dunked in a seperate container and make sure that they are fully submerged, to avoid contams. after you've dunked them you crumble and case, or roll in verm depending on what tek you are using.
dammit u beat me to it

yes, dunking re-hydrates the cakes, but more importanltly it drops the temp of the cakes to initiate pinning.

do you crumble right after you are done dunking, or do you wait for them to dry out?

Also, after the first flush, I have to pic off anything and everything that grew on the mycellium? Then dunk and go at it again? How will the cake know to stop growing shrooms/pins?

pat them down lightly w/ a paper towel then put them in a plastic bag and crumble them (to be sterile). then they go in the casing, i dunno about dunking them again after the first flush. i've heard of people doing it but i have never tried it myself, the cake will just keep growing shrooms until the mycelium is spent. from what i've observed on the site most people get like 2 or 3 flushes out of their cakes.
