I guess I was wrong (wbs update)

I put my inoculated wbs jars which were thought to be oversaturated and had too many explodes into my newly constructed incubator and just hours later I saw many white mycellium fuzzing up the jar. I gave em a shake to spread them out some and they disappeared into the center of the jar but now they're still colonizing nicely. Hell they'll probably finish before my PF cakes are done forming.

I found a pretty cool thermometer at Kmart for $10. It attatches with velcro onto the outside of my tub and has a little sensor I can put inside as well. I can moniter the inside temp and the outside temp so it's a little easier to maintain the 81-85 range. I recommend getting one if you're on a budget.

Cool, sounds like it is happening for you.

I actually had more luck with wet jars then dried out jars.  They stall on me big time when they are dry.

Good Luck man!! :toast:

sounds like a great deal 10$ for a thermomometer. good job!

Yea i understand now what is wet and what is too wet. The worst part is the wait. My PF cakes are looking strong but they seem like they've stopped or slowed. Not every hole had colonization, usually just 2 per jar, and the jars look like one side is white and the other is still just the substrate. Will the mycelium spread to the other half of the jar on its own or is there something I should be doing to help it along?

If the jars are pretty far along, the only thing you can do with PF cakes is turning the jars upside down. This lets the C02 escape a little.

Grains are a different story. A shake can get them going again sometimes.

Cool thanks for the advice. I'll be posting some pics as soon as they're a little further along...I don't want to distrub them again lol.

Aye definately don't shake them more than the one time shake to spread around the colonized grains... it can cause them to stall, when you break up the myc network.  Sounds good though  Grats!

I am going to try a new experiment with pf jars on my next set. I find that one side stalls like that as well. It seems like the cake is getting old and not airy enough to allow the myc to colonize. I am going to take a flame sterilized needle and stick it in the jar and mix it up a little on the uncolonized side. See if it promotes growth to that side.
