Female Musicians worth listening too

OK. So, I was thinking, I know Tori Amos and Bjork are worth listening too. But, I am sure there are other female artists who are worth listening too without just banking on appealing to 13 year olds. Who are they? I am more interested in people who write a lot of their own or their bands music.

Vocaly, my love is for grunting death metal... so that doesn't translate well to females. Unfortunatly. I do soooo love them.
I am looking though my music files, and am actualy appaled at the lack of female representation. Shit.
I second your question, for sure. Always in search of good music.

PJ Harvey! Listen to To Bring You My Love, and Rid Of Me, and all her other albums. Her voice is incredible, and her music just rocks.
The Throwing Muses (fronted by Kristin Hersh, who also has great solo stuff like Hips And Makers). They have transformed a lot over the years, so pick a style. Their first 1986 self titled album is punk with a little country and a lot of mental illness. The Real Ramona, from 1991, is probably the best one overall. It's a little poppier, but it's just wonderful. Another standout is University, wich has kind of a middle-period Pearl Jam sound.
Also check out Sleater Kinney's new album, The Woods.

Nicos only on the first VU album. Jefferson Airplane was pretty good with the album Surrealistic Pillow. Female jazz singers from like 20's-40's are pretty good. Lydia Lunch has her moments. A LOT of soul and R&B groups from the 50's and 60's have female lead singers, and are quite good. Motown sound, that sort of thing, with Booker T & the MG's backing them up.

The only good female musicians I have ever heard were vocalists or violinists/cello players. I've never heard a female playing percussion, piano, saxophone, guitar or bass at a virtuoso level, only men seem to excel in this area.

I know Nico's only on one album thats why I listed said album and not said band. Nico had a solo career too.

"People tend to confuse the band Mazzy Star with it's singer Hope Sandoval. Truth be told, they've been right all along. Sandoval's languid, weeping willow voice is Mazzy Star; the name is a mere formality. With nods to Nico and the Velvet Underground, So Tonight that I Might See is vintage Mazzy. Remarkably, the recording produced a strikingly undanceable single, "Fade into You". The rest of the album sticks close to the single's plaintive, retro balladry. Though Sandoval rarely raises her voice above a sultry whisper, it's bright enough to hold your attention all night."

I dont know of too many females. Heart is good. I like some Janis Joplin. Im sure I am missing alot. If you are really on the search for females, look into some country music (im sure I will be flamed to no end for this, although I grew up in a small town, and still do, and love country almost as much as rock, and am into wheeling, camping etc etc etc) Flame on.

Fiona Apple is good. Cat Power is definitely worth listening to. Yo La Tengo have male and female vocals and are iincredibly good. Download the song "weather shy" and "blue line swinger" if you want to hear her at her best. she's the drummer too.

i object to the "worth listening to" phrase in the title. There are so many great female musicians, you just gotta open your mind to it. You gotta break the incubus, phish...[insert cliche band here] mold that i read a lot about on here. i'm sorry that was way out of line. like whatever suits you, but i'm just saying...there's so much out there, so much you may not be aware of. There are plenty of great female artists, you just gotta open your mind and find them. Some of my faves:
Laetitia Sadier & Mary Hansen: Stereolab, Brokeback, The High Llamas Kate Wright: Movietone Trish Keenan: Broadcast Valerie Trebeljahr: Lali Puna Rosie Cluckston: Pram PJ Harvey Astrud Gilberto Bebel Gilberto Juana Molina Hope Sandoval: Mazzy Star, The Warm Inventions Jessika Rapo: Le Futur Pompiste Kim Gordon: Sonic Youth
...and many mnay more
For the record i think Tori Amos sucks

Well i was going to start my own thread but this works fine.
A friend just recently sent me what i believe is the newest album 'Noah's Ark' by: CocoRosie - This music is amazing, i suggest everyone to check it out. so very very good. amazing album altogether.
Also i saw it was already mentioned but..
Joanna Newsom - amazingly cool voice, plays the harp, very cool almost fairy tale lyrics. beautiful music altogether
Regina Spektor - i've only heard her new album Soviet Kitsch. very good. Genera is "antifolk" i guess punk and folk. don't let that stop you from checking it out, its different and very good.

Nina Hagen and Suzanne Vega are two very good female musicians, who write most of their own music -Tranceharper

Tori, Fiona, Ani, Bjork....forget all those kittens. The one name I can't believe I haven't seen yet is
Joni Mitchell
Joni Mitchell
Joni Mitchell
My favorites are Court and Spark and The Hissing of Summer Lawns. Those are from the jazz rock period. I know her folk stuff is great too, like on the album Blue which you allllways hear about, but I haven't really gotten into the early folk period or the later rock and folk return stuff. The two albums I listed are truly supreme. Joni has a voice like no other and she also writes the music, plays guitars, keys, synths and she paints! Alot of the art in the album liners is created by her. Check her out.

Joanna Newsom - amazingly cool voice, plays the harp, very cool almost fairy tale lyrics. beautiful music altogether
Really want to second this, you're missing out if you've never given her a chance. Maybe start with the album Ys.... A girl I met thanked me for introducing it to her, she said "Felt it was the most intense love/ journey story ever. Thank you."
-------------------- Everything is better than it was the last time. I'm good. If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care. It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence. I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too. If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Lots of great ones already mentioned, just wanted to add Imogen Heap to the list. She has done a lot of really interesting things besides just being an amazingly talented musician.
