Pachanoi shriveling
    #4474454 - 07/30/05 06:11 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Its my first summer with the pachanoi, and they aren't liking the heat (I dont blame em!)
Their upper parts are getting pretty wrinkly, and at the base they seem to be drawing away from the soil.
I've tried watering every 2-3 days deeply, but they still aren't perking up.
I may soon throw shading material over them, and hope they make it to fall.
Can anyone send some helpful tips, or advice my way? Maybe a little karma too

On the other hand I now have a jungle of pereskiopsis. Thanks stonehenge!!

Are they in the ground? are they in pots? clay pots or plastic?
Is the skin a pale yellow colour? They can adapt to full sun, it must be pretty hot over there because they can take the heat in my glasshouse.

Sounds like root damage. shrunken base, shriveled top. Seems like the plants alive its just got an internal war going on.

U water every 2 to 3 days deeply. Does that mean it doesnt have time to dry out well. Cacti roots for the most part dont like being wet every singal day.

fs:
The are in the ground. The main section of the cacti is a light green, the pups
are a very nice dark green. The temps were in the high 110s when this started happening.

SHIITAKE:
I'm concerned the shrinking base may have let some bugs into the ground to eat some roots.
I'll check, the cockroaches we have are very hungry, all the time.
The soil does dry out between waterings.

Its odd, the peruvianus right next to the pachanoi are doing fine.
But I guess they are from different parts of the world, right?
I'll shade the pachanoi and fill in the gaps between the cacti and soil with sand.
Thx for the replies.

Pachanois love water in hot weather. Don't be scared to flood them. Unlike most cactus they don't mind wet feet while they are growing. As usual, keep them dry when they are dormant.

Check for meally bugs. They can colonise under the ground level along the base and cause many many problems eventualy causing death.
