Green algae-like substance in mycobag
    #4478572 - 07/31/05 10:39 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Should I throw this bag out?? I woke up to check up on it and noticed the bag's a lot more white however there's green algae like substances on the mycelium block. I squicshed some through the bag and it looks
like algae but it just sprung up overnight.

How did you "squish some through the bag"? Do you mean you squished some out to examine it, or that you just squished it between the layers of the bag...?

Im still learning this hobby myself and can by no means offer you an authoritative answer but I will do my best. Your bag may not be sealed properly or it may not have been inoculated properly. Actually any other number of things may have happened. One thing for sure is that it has become infested w/ a contam of some sort. I would personally throw out something as obviously creepy as that.

Do not open it up to examine it or anything, just pitch it and start over!

How should I properly inoculate? I had used a lighter to sterilize the needle but I do remember not heating it to the point where the needle became orange. Was that my problem, improper sterilization? Anyway, thanks for the help. Will order some more bags and toss this one out.

After heating the needle to an orange glow be sure to have an alcohol soaked swab or paper towel to wipe it down with. Also wipe down the point of insertion with alcohol. And to be super safe spray down your entire work area with Lysol before doing anything!

To be completely honest with you, these bags are a waste of money...
My first grow was on a bag and the results were less than spectacular.

For what you spend on these bags you can get yourself a setup that will continue to produce pleasing results over and over again. Ask the right questions and the community will give you what you need.
