New Terrarium Idea (Pic)
    #447847 -

Last night I was thinking, and it finally hit me. I mean simplicity is the key right. Well here it is.

One huge 50 gallon rubermaid bin.
Sheet of plexi-glass
Weather-stripping(foam)
Humidifier

Instead of the usual, make a manafold and run hose, just stick the humidifier right inside the terrarium, bam!

I've already tested this and have mantained a steady RH% of 98%(I know this is a little high for casings but it can be lowered).
One hole drilled in the bottom for CO2 exhaust.

Sorry for the wierd angle :/

NOW THE DILEMA ------>

When I place my hand over the exhaust hole there is no pressure. Which is expected of course since there is no intake in the system, my question is WILL THIS SYSTEM WORk!!! Will the co2 drain and be replaced by O2.

Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.

the air exchange sounds like it would be a problem... maybe some fish pumps or something would help?

yeah unfortunately unless you can somehow rig the intake of the humidifier to draw from outside the terrarium you will need some kind of pump to bring in air or you aren't going to get good circulation.

ok assuming that you are using an ultrasonic humidifyer. These usually have electric motors attached to fans inside to propell the mist out of the humidifyer. Hence electric SHOCK.
I think you should break down and go with the flow on this "manifold hose"
I've seen casings that covered entire terrairium bottoms made from a fish tank,a plexiglass lid with 2 holes, intake and, exaust. On the exaust hole there was a long upside-down U shaped pvc for Co2 siphoning (one leg of the "U" in and one out) at the level just above the substrate. just lay a half-inch layer of sterilised moist (not wet)perlite on the bottom to act as a "water buffer" so the mycel dont drown. 11 half-pint jars work best for a regular 10 gal tank, you can add a little casing too.
O well, dont zap yourselves, or burn your house down, i highly reccommend aginst these things.

Yeah youre definetly right. It is a bit of overkill. Unfortunetly I have neither the time or the inclination to solve this problem at the moment. Fortunetly for me my particular model has a built in humidistat (I think thats what its called) that automaticly turns the unit off at desired humidity. Also the system, which happens to use a cool moisture humidifier not an ultrasonic, has been tested thouroughly, and shows no sign of malfunction. This being the case I beleive that I can lower the humidity even further by adjusting the humidistat and by increasing airflow. Thus increasing safety factors to a reasonable level.

That being said, could I get away with drilling another hole say 2-3" below the lid, thus creating a suction effect by the co2 draining out the bottom hole? Is this feasible, or do I really need some sort of pump or other device?

Well I went ahead and drilled a hole in the top of the lid. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Is there any definitive, easy way to determine co2 levels? I'm guessing there probably isn't without expensive equipement, but what do I know.

You know... thats a damm good point. With humidity levels aprouching 100% there might be a VERY high risk of electrical shock.

Damm good point you made.

As to the issue of electric shock, these things are HUMIDIFIERS, I mean wouldn't logic dictate that the air coming out of the unit would reach RH% levels approaching 100% any way? Please correct me if I am wrong.

They're saying that the humidifier is in a closed in area where the humidity is going to be excessively high... humidifiers are normally used in a room where its very unlikely you're going to get the humidity to a high level. All the electrical workings of the humidifier are inside a box where the humidity is going to be very high which could create a safety issue. Guess you can try it out and see, just be carefull. I think that buying a few fish pumps, some perlite, and a rubbermaid container would work better and be less of a hassle. Just be carefull... guess its not as dangerous as the humidity tek where you put a light bulb in a glass of water though (poor man's humidity tek or something).

what about the suction??? do I really need a pump?

There's an easy way but it's not acurate, it's like an eye test. It consist on lighting a match and put it inside the terrarium, you don't drop it, just grab it and start going down with your hand, the match flame should be shorter as you go down or even extinguish at the bottom. This experiment is based in three assumptions, 1- The match needs oxigen to burn , 2 - Co2 is heavier than oxigen and 3- The flame should extinguish with an high concentration of Co2.

Peace,
MAIA
