I know that mushrooms need inderect light every day.. but how much, and how early do I give them light? Should I "up" the light (indirect sunlight) as they grow?

Start giving them light when you are trying to pin, 12 on 12 off is good.

The FAQs help a lot. I strongly suggest you read the basic growing info before you start - it'll help a lot in the long run. Pinning is just the little "baby" mushrooms starting to pop up. They look like little pinheads basically. They are what become adult mushrooms for uh... "later use"...

I am new also and beginning to understand the lingo. I believe 'pinning' is the stage where little pins, sort of like a 'pin dicks' start to emerge. Like little teeny weeny shrooms start to reveal themselves out of your substrate. I guess the light is sort of massaging the pins and making them erect into much larger mushrooms. Please correct me if I am wrong as I ussually am to somebody.

What about lighting before this stage?

All the light does is signal to the mycellium that it is time to turn into "mushroom mode".  P. Cubensis mushrooms especially rely on this method of changing into the mushroom phase.

Unless you are in the fruiting stage, keep the substrate away from long exposure to light - this will lead to premature pinning, short yield of mushrooms, and also a greater chance of contamination as some of the substrate will be open to non-mushroom growth.  Its still fine to take them out of the dark to check the growth though.  I don't think the light really massages the pinheads however.. correct me if I'm wrong though, I'm new too.
