PC cooking questions

I've just started my mushroom cultivation project and noticed something that I was worried about.  When I pulled my jars out of my pressure cooker there was no water left in the cooker.  I'm not sure if this is normal but i'm worried I may have dried out my substrate.  Should I be worried?  I did them in 2 batches since my PC could only hold 8 jars at a time.  When I did the other 4 jars I put 2x the water in the cooker but it was still all gone when I got done.  I originally put 1" of water in the PC with the jars in it.  Then let it sit overnight after cooking at 15psi for 1 hour.  I did the same thing with the other 4 jars but I put 2" of water in the PC this time.  Anyway, i'm just checking to see if I screwed it up :smile: ... thanks for the help guys!  Also, how long should I wait to see something grow?  When should I be worried?  I know i need to have patience, i've read it quite a bit on this board :smile: ... i've got the jars in a clear plastic container so I don't disturb them when i check on them.

the only way to know is to knock them up as for time towait, cant really say, worry after 3 weeks though

make sure all your seals are good. inspect them if you havent already.... also make sure you are bringing your cooker up to speed gradually. when you allow the steam to vent out of the pressure vent, you dont want it to be shooting like mad out or nothin. nice and gentle. other than that i probably couldnt help you

The seals were good, I did bring it up gradually. According to the manual I think the proper amount of steam was coming out. It was a gradual stream of steam. When you guys PC your jars is there water left in the pot when you open it?

Damn, that sucks, how much water do you put in the PC? How far up the jars is the water? Also, how could I tell if the jars are moist enough?

My first PC attempt I used the same amount of water as I use now (1.5 - 2 inches), but ran out after about an hour. It was because I let the pressure cooker get to hot. You can tell your pressure cooker is too hot/high pressure if the steam is coming out too much.

If it is, back off the heat until you have just a little bit of steam coming out. Steam rolling out is the only way you will run out of water. Now- I do not notice more than 1/2 inch, if any, missing after 1.5 hours PC at about 15psi.

That happened to me when I used the steaming method (before I had a PC) and my jars are still doing pretty well. As long as they haven't cracked I'd just inoculate them and see where they go. Just make sure they stay incubated.

Cool, i guess I was PCing too high. I guess I'll wait and see if something starts growing in the jars. I hope I didn't PC any of the moisture out of the jars.
