gold
    #4476585 - 07/31/05 09:30 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

what's up with that?

Why is gold so expensive? It is useless, exept maybe for being a good electrical medium.

Is it because it shines? Because it is rare?

Shit from endangered tigers is also rare, yet we do not collect it.
I guess it's because it is shiny after all

what do you think?

Yes.

Some people do. In Asia there are a lot of animal parts which are collected - even from endangered animals.

You can grow a new tiger without too much difficulty...but you can't grow or make new gold, you have to find it.

Gold is still worth a lot because it has been a staple trading comodity for as long as humans have had civilization. Gold is an easy metal to smelt and work, when you do find any, so even early man would have been able to use it to fashion into objects of value (reilgious objects were the first, I think). It's quite soft, especially when very pure, so it's also easy to stamp out coins with gold.

There are other metals which are more rare than gold, and they do cost quite a bit more. Platinum is worth more than gold, for example.

So yeah, it all comes down to rarity.

It's rare if you go to find it.

but it is not rare for people in cities, they can buy gold objects anywhere, and yet they worship them, like they mean something.

I think it is because it is a symbol of how much money you can spend.
It would be easier for everyone to just ask:

"excuse me, how much money do you have?"
"I have 100 000 in my bank accound, I have two houses"
"thank you"
"good bye sir"
"bye"

Gold is money

Cultural icons like gold do not die out quickly, even when it isn't being directly used as "money", so it's no surprise that today we still have (as a society) a love of gold.

It's only been a relatively short few years since the average person could almost never afford gold for jewlery and such, in that light it's still fairly new for the common man.

well I understand the practicality of keeping money in gold bricks, but I'm talking about gold that you wear on your face and arms.
You don't keep your money in that form. You buy it to show to others.

You can't eat it, you can't drink it, it does not chanel any information, it is barely visible (does not give you a new esthetical look like new clothes do), it is not even amusing.

partly because its rare, and also because it is very durable. same with silver, platinum and diamonds.

Durable? For what? It's not like it is used in engines. Considering the use, it might as well been plastic

Not to get off topic here, (Hell everyone knows gold is only useful because long ago a few humans decided to care about one specific thing more than others to make everyone else nervous and sad). Buuuuuttt... Goldshlagger is easily the worst alcohol ever concocted by man or beast. Cripes, even Pernod is better than that poison.

Gold has all sorts of impressive physical properties: it's the most malleable and ductile material known, a great conductor of heat and electricity, very stable and chemically resistant to the point of being nearly inert. The last point means that less advanced civilizations could use it as a standard value since it's one of the most pure (and relatively uncommon) substances that they'd have access to.

Of course I imagine the main reasons are just that it's always been relatively rare and pretty and shiny. People like shiny things. I know I do.

Hehe, yeah, shiny like the sun !
And easy to HANDle (give hand to hand), not like plutonium, or was it stronzium ?
Hmm, perhaps, one aspect what makes it so special is also, that there is no use for it, which would raise its 'usage-value' above its 'rareness-value' ? On the other hand, if gold would be more useful it obviosly would be much more expensive.
So the matter itself remains stable in front of practical purpose !

Mono-atomic gold?

Like... as in having only one atom, and thereby lacking any sort of impurities?

high demand from materialists [its a commodity to a jewler]. low supply from mines.

durable for being durable. gold wouldn't be very valuable if it corroded in a few weeks. its so durable that its near enough permanent. if you get a chunk of gold, its going to remain a chunk of gold for a very, very long time unless you subject it to extreme conditions.

plastic is very easy to mass produce - high supply, low value.

The development of international trade needed the gold system. Currency had to be based on something of limited availability so that the rich countries would be rich and the poor would be poor. It could have been other things but gold America had a lot of gold when the industrial revolution let them start shipping shit all over the world.

Showing off gold suggests that somebody has the qualities of desire and greed.

Although a large majority just follow trends thoughtlessly and without question, in a sheep-like fashion.

There is no inherent trait that is always displayed by someone who is wearing gold. Propose that a man is wearing a gold band on his finger, and that he was graciously given the gold band from a friend after the man saved his friend's life. Propose that the man didn't want to take the ring, but that his friend was steadfast in that the man should take the ring, and that the man did not want to dissapoint his friend.

Such a situation is very plausible to have occured in reality; now, let me ask you, where is the display of greed and desire in that situation?

Wearing gold suggests that the person is wearing gold. Wearing gold, in itself, is not a sign of anything beyond that the person is wearing gold. The intention for why someone would wear gold are questionable and perhaps even investigatable, but the intentions do not exist within the gold or the act of wearing it.
