The first time I saw it, years ago, I just thought it was alright. Recently, I've been watching it a lot, because I just sort of got the urge out of nowhere. It's *currently* probably my favorite movie: I ALSO really like Nico a lot now. ( These Days is her song; it plays when Margot gets off the bus to pick up Richie .. It's off of the album Chelsea Girl, which is also really good)

I had a similar experience with 'Rushmore'. I think the two films are made by the same producer or director?

Royal Tenenbaums is a great movie but I have to see it again because I hardly remember it.

Yeah, dry humor movies are the best. It takes a few times to fully appreciate them.

I love the movie.
I hate this post however. Sidescrolling makes me so pissed I could spit.

personally, i hate this movie and all others by this director he takes great actors and wrings every little bit of emotion from them no one really says or does anything. i call this the "george lucas school of acting" and it makes my blood boil to the point where i can't stand it i have a theory that the only people who liked royal tennenbaums are people whose parents are still married but thats beside the point... the point is that it is extremely trendy right now to film yr movie in washed out colors and have everyone walking around saying one line of dialogue to each other every few minutes while they look sullen and defeated and you play yr record collection as the soundtrack... ok now i will get out of the pub... /end rant

Interesting. Why is that?

I think you're very, very wrong in this case. I'll admit Star Wars has bad acting, but The Royal Tenenbaums only used something similar *where it was necessary.* Are you suggesting acting should be a flurry of constant, active passion?

no i am only asking that when people are supposed to be in love they show it... wes anderson makes everyone act like a goddamn rice cake we don't need over acting, but not under acting either that's what makes a director great --when he can tell his actors that they are either over or under reacting to a situation....

IMHO underacting is never "necessary" as you stated, but it seems to be Mr. Anderson's forte... maybe this is some sort of exsistential statement about life in general... but i doubt it and it pisses me off
now....bf6, in response to my theory, i work in a movie/music store, and i talk with many people every day about music and movies, and most people seem to either love or hate the royal tennenbaums it has been my observation that those who loved it came from homes where the mother and father were still married and lived together... most of the folks i talked to who hated it, grew up in a single parent home or one where either the birth father or mother was not present for whatever reason... i'm sure this theory isn't 100% infallible, but it seems to hold water from my own observations... i'd be interested in whether shroomery member hold to my theory or not...

I think it is though. That's what makes this dry humor, but very faithful to an aspect of reality.

Life Aquatic is currently my favorite movie, Also by Wes of course. It is the subtle humor of his movies & the mood that they set which makes them so truly unique. It is because they aren't like every other movie out there that makes them good & if you think that his directing brings out the emotionless side of the actors he works with you are quite simply missing the point and/or you just cannot enjoy this type of movie & the way in which it presents itself.
I often find myself thinking "eh, not bad" upon a first time viewing of a WA movie but for some unexplicable reason I always end up watching his movies over & over again. The characters & setting become so comfortable & warm in a stale, emotionless sort of way :~

I was just trying to watch the Life Aquatic, but it always freezes at the same spot. I'll have to go back to the rental place and exchange it, and watch it again tomorrow. Looks good so far. :P
