In my experience, NO.

I have searched many big piles of chips, which have been sitting in the same place for a couple years and they never turn up on the piles, around the pile, yes, but not on.
I believe there is some sort of interaction that takes place with the soil under/around the chips which promotes the fruiting.
I have a friend who has covered his lawn in woodchips 6-9 inches thick, it feels like a water bed when you walk on it. He inoculated it early last spring and we could see the mycelium running through everywhere.  Yet this fall, it hardly fruited at all.  I think after a certain thickness you're actually harming the situation by not allowing the interaction with the microbes that are essential to fruiting.

You'd be better off spreading out that pile and making it an inch or two thick.

Peace

thats what i thought, but would mostly leafs work instead of woodchips? Cause all the leafs are falling off right now on all the alders down the road.

Stamets says to use wood with as little leaf as possible. That you should collect the wood in the winter/spring before the leafs go on.

I've seen it done, but you'd be better off chipping it or just using chips.
They don't fruit well off of logs.

you want aged alder chips..not leaves.

if you are going to shred some alder chips up now they are going to be green...not aged.

I usually borrow a chipper and cut up some small alder trees and branches.
I usually get a couple pickup truck loads full.
spread it out 3" to 4" thick...leave it for a year.
let it age and then inoculate it after the alder has aged and decomposed a little.

the only way around this is finding a landscaping company that has aged alder chips already.

or go to a park that has a pile of alder chips and help yourself to some.

or inoculate a park that already has some alder chips in it.
lolzz

good luck!~
