Blood Meal: How Much?
    #4474343 - 07/30/05 07:36 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I've read Roadkill's, Hippie Chick's, and Diver's posts regarding using blood meal with h poo to boost potency. Has anyone standarized yet how much should be added, or how much is too much? I used 1/4 cup in a large breadpan full of h poo prior to pasteurization, and so far the OI grown on rye berries spawned in the poo/meal seems to be very happy with it. I'll report later on how well it fruits or any special problems.

not sure about rk's or hc's posts but diver added the bm to the water and then soaked the poo in it. 1/4 cup to a bread pan sounds like a lot to me. hope all goes well though.
peace

Thank you for your opinion, Agar, but I'm asking for specific, expert suggestions on how much to use. Clearly you believe 1/4 cup is too much for a large bread pan full of h poo. Diver mentioned 1/4 cup in his post but didn't say how much poo he was soaking, so I've been proceeding in the dark here. I have found no standard by which to judge how much might be too little or too much. One factor to consider, I think, is that the blood meal is extremely fine in texture, and I suspect from the color and smell of the poo tea that a fair amount of it washes out with the pasteurization water.

So far the OI myc seem to be colonizing the poo/meal well as it is, but we'll see as days pass... I'll try a couple more different strains also, and see how they do. Perhaps you could suggest an amount you have experienced works. I'm really looking for specific guidance here, if anyone can offer that. Thanks.

Agar's most def. a noob and doesn't know what he's talking about...:lmfao:

Diver said that 1/4 a cup in whatever amount he used - Was too much...Even even said so later in the thread...

I read somewhere that a teaspoon (or several) was good for about 5-10lbs...

But I could be wrong.

And there really isn't a standard yet of how much to use..

But there is a "standard" for using to much...lol

Anyways, Good luck in you endevors

If you were to give Igno & I a few million dollar CASH  grant, we would gladly set up a lab....then..... run a few thousand tests - with controls & give you EXPERT answers, in 12 to 16 months.

By my feeble calculations  :stoned:, an optimal compost specifically tailored for dung lovers is: carbon / nitrogen ratio <17:1, nitrogen 2.6%, phosphorus 0.2-05%, potassium 1.5-2.5%, calcium 1.5-2.5%, available boron <2 ppm, available ammonium <10 ppm, soluble salts 3.0-5 OdS/m.

Blood meal runs around nitrogen 13.25, phosphorus 1.00, potassium 0.60.

Do a few calculations, and figure it out - yourself.

Lol.

I'd have to concur....

And as soon as I get that million, i'll be well on my way

But until then...I'ma guess - For Free

Just out of couriousity...

All the left-overs (poo-T)....Can that be used for a dunk with your cakes (before spawning to the poo of course)...

I'm sure it can but I highly doubt it'd be needed lol.

I'm just wondering whether or not it'd hurt more so than hurt...

I've used poo-T before...And of course it helped more so than hurt...But I'm wondering if that extra N would hurt...

It depends on the N content of the cake (spawn)& substrate.

Optimal N (IMHO) is close to 2.6 - 2.7%.

If you can figure out the N content of your cake mix, or substrate, then adjust accordingly.

To much of a good thing, generally results in bad outcomes.

Hm...That's what I was thinking.

And I have no idea how to find N content :smirk:

But i'll keep that in mind :cool2:

I have soaked grain in dried blood. I can calc it to be 2.6% (agar- that is 2.6% when wet right?)
The problem is that the blood is not very soluble, also the outside of the grains will have more than the insides, so it is not a simple weight ratio for grains. I added some and rinsed more of the non-disolved blood off, I now have no idea how much is on the grain. It started as 40g blood to 200g dry grain. If I was to do it again I would only add 5g blood. If you add it to a BRF cake it would be easier to calculated since it should be "coating" the grain more evenly since it is so fine.

Update:

The OI strain still seems to be colonizing the h poo/b meal at a normal rate so far. The B+, spawned a couple days later, is starting to take off, too.

One downside of blood meal is the strong smell, in contrast to just h poo, that is virtually odorless by comparison.
