Please Help Identify! {images}
    #4474032 - 07/30/05 05:48 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Dear Hunters,
I am new to hunting mushrooms, but not new to eating them. I recently sodded my parents yard over existing small patches of grass (damage from the hurricanes in Florida). I was just there today and noticed there were mushrooms sprouting out of the new sod. My guess was that the underlying grass layer had rotten and perhaps spawned these mushrooms with the aid of the sun, heat, and moisture of the Florida summer. I gathered quite a large number of them for identification. They are all physically the same, though some are entirely white and others have gold caps with white stems. The golden capped ones have a rust colored underside. I have heard that crushing them to reveal a blue smudge identifies the psilocybin mushrooms, so I crushed them. The white ones did not really change color, but the gold capped ones smeared reddish purple. I figured there was no harm in gathering them all (just in case they were magical), so I foraged until I had about a pound. I have included some images that hopefully will help. I apologize for my lack of terminology, but I promise to improve my knowledge! If more images would help please let me know! Also, should these be psilocybin mushrooms, is there a simple method used to preserve them, such as refrigeration?
Thanks!

First Things first! Get them out of that plastic bag and let the air get to em...

With another look at the pic's I can also say they are starting to rot...

You may need to dump them and start with some fresh specimens

Plastic bags and mushrooms dont mix. You need to collect in a Paper bag or a basket...
To dry the mushrooms just set them out on news paper with good air flow.. Mushrooms that small will dry in a day or two..
What you have looks like a common lawn mushroom in the south .. I have a pic here that my lawn mushrooms look like they have the same gold cap and white hollow stem... no blue and a rust spore.. Not active but cool to look at!
is this anything like the one's you have found?

The other Darker Brown with Brown /Rust stem.. I wont comment on that one..

Sure looks like conocybe lactea. Thus begins your Search for true psilocybians. Buy a few good guides and keep at it. You will find what your lookin for eventually.

I separated the dry mushrooms from the brown wet jelly ones. Here are some images of them as is. Are these psilocybin mushrooms, or are they dangerous? Also, could I simply boil the jellified ones and preserve the rest?
Thanks again!

Wohh. I was wrong. New pics reveal new info. That is definately not Conocybe lactea. Unfortunately I can't tell from the photo's what they are. Looks like possibly Paneolus of some sort. Do you know how to take a spore print?

Never eat any mushroom you have any doubts about!!!

I do not know how to take a spore print. If you could possibly simplify how to do this or point me in the direction of some online instructions I would be more than happy to take a spore print.

Yessup is right about storage. Plastic doesn't let the mushrooms breath. If you leave them in plastic they will definately rot quick. Take a good spore print. Buy a few good field guides and take your time identifying mushrooms. Your life depends on it,Bro. The ones in the picture don't look like actives to me. Still it would be benificial to you to make an honest attempt to identify them. It will only make you more learned in the ways of mushrooms.

Spore prints are easy. Just cut off the stem close to the gills. Place the cap (gill side down of course)on some clean paper. Cover with an upside down glass and let sit for some time. Overnight would be good. If your short on time a few hours might be enough time to get a good idea of color. Spore prints are a major help in determining Genus. Read up.

Take one of the nice caps.. Lay it flat on a white sheet of paper.. Stick a cup or glass over the top and forget about it for a few hours or over night!
This will help you get a better understanding of the Type of mushroom you have..
I see about 3 strains in your haul..
Print all three..
Do more than one of each to get good clear dark prints..
Get good close up pics then post them...
Then sit back and let the controversy begin...

Thanks!
I'm printing now and I will report my findings with an image as soon as a print is visible. Oh, and I'm going to do some shroom studying in the mean time.
