Emotionally attached yet the time has come to hack it down *NOW WITH PICS*
    #4470290 - 07/29/05 04:54 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Well, the time has come for me to hack up a bit of my San Pedro and extract some mescaline for consumption.

I've never hacked up a cactus before. I need to dry the cactus and am planning on using a food dehydrator. Will this work well?

To make cactus "chips" do I just cut up the cactus into stars? Do I have to take the spines off or anything? I want to get 500 grams of dried cactus.

Sorry for all the questions...I'm a noob to cactus as you can tell. I've been reading a lot about extraction recently and just feel now is the time.

Have you stressed the plant yet to boost the mescaline production?

Yep you should peel it and remove the spines and the core.

To make chips i assume you'll need to cut it into fine stars and dry those. Than break'em up to the desired size.

You can easily extract from fresh cactus as well, in case you didn't know that. Seems to me it would save you a lot of trouble.

Cutting them down then watching the new pups form is cool.

Why do you want it dried. Just freeze it thaw it then cook it.

DON'T remove any part of the cactus. Use MJ's method. I think part of the reason his method is so succesful is because the core and skin probably have more alkoloids than everyone assumes.

She's talking about doing an extraction, not making tea.

Just hacked mine down, and have almost finished making the tea.

It's a sad process, isn't it? :frown:

if you want mescaline soup, us mj's tek. if you want chrystals, drying it would be the way to go. powdering it finely will make sure u will get the most out of it too

Not too heavy, probably a pound and a quarter, was a piece about 20" but only ~2" wide

Wow, it's not too strong, but wow. Wow

Very subtle magical feeling, slight visuals (lines extrude from objects n such), and a nice mind dissolving...

Played the piano and fell into a trance...

Only been a couple hours, I'll tell you how the rest is after it's over.

you can use fresh cactus ..

Hey yeah! I saw that tek. I am using a different one though that requires powdered cactus...this is because I figure it will be easiest for a newbie like me to work with powder instead of sludge.

the secret is to freeze and thaw it twice. don't dry it. it breaks open the cell walls.

That powder will rehydrate to sludge as soon as you add any kind of liquid. This is the reason why gelcaps of dried cactus are a bad idea.

That's what I thought too until I did an extraction using some old cactus capsules I found hiding out in my room. Once I added the base water solution I expected to have a slimy mess but it wasn't near as bad as using fresh cactus.

Also, not just any liquid makes it swell up to slime. Alcohol surely doesn't.

I have pictures!

And I discovered that something is wrong with my cactus.  :frown:  It has little brownish spots all over it!

This is the arm I'm chopping off...it's over 2 feet long.

And here is the close-up of the little brown spots!

Keep in mind that I have done nothing to this cactus beside give it water from time to time.  Did I fuck up?  Was I supposed to feed it fertilizer or something?  Can I save this cactus from mortal doom?  Is it okay to eat the mescaline from it?

Thanks for all the help...no REALLY thank you!  It's handy to have people hold my hand as I enter this new territory.

2 feet of cactus is anywhere near 500g dry. With some luck it'll be 100g dried or something (probably less if you remove the core).

I bet it won't die. You should have fed it and limed it for better growth but that may not be the cause of the brown spots.

Dry cactus won't slime in extractions because...well...it's a quite heavy lye solution they use, not just tap water.

I still think it would be much less troublesome to just cook the cactus as usual, basify the tea and go from there...
Those dry teks are originally designed for commercial dry cactus AFAIK.

I was also thinking about using another arm.

I was wondering about the mescaline powder to cactus ratio. How much powder (on average if I did everything correctly) would a 100 gram cactus yield?

OH, and I just remembered that I have a bag of hydrated lime. Is this the type of lime you would use? How much would be appropriate per size of the cactus?

thanks in advance!
