Hello everyone,I'm here with the pics from today's hunt 7-29-05. They are all inactives and there are a few edibles in there.I'm only going to be eating the chanterelles so I'm only interested in the IDs for personal preference. If anyone can let me know if my Ids are correct that would be great. If they aren't correct It would be nice to know the proper ID but if I cant give enough info for a particular mushroom then no ID is expected...On with the porn
This first mushroom is what I believe to be a Caesar mushroom (Amanita caesarea).Am I correct? http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Amanita%20caesarea/DSCF0707.JPG another http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Amanita%20caesarea/DSCF0710.JPG here is a shot of the cuplike sack at the base of the stalk http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Amanita%20caesarea/DSCF0712.JPG one more photo http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Amanita%20caesarea/DSCF0713.JPG
The next mushrooms are some shots of the 2 chanterelles I found today.Only two!!! bummer... http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Cantharellus%20cibarius/DSCF0746.JPG and here is a shot of one that was in a hole..actually in a freakin hole.It may not look like it but the hole was atleast 4 inches deep.Ill include a few shots so u can get an idea of it. http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Cantharellus%20cibarius/DSCF0757.JPG another http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Cantharellus%20cibarius/DSCF0759.JPG
The next mushroom is what I thought was a false caesar mushroom(Amanita parcivolvata)but it didn't have any universal veil remnants on the cap.So I may be wrong. But it did have a bulbous stalk. http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Amanita%20parcivolvata/DSCF0749.JPG
Here is a 3 stalked reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)Whats the best way to consume this mushroom for its medicinal properties?Tea? http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Ganoderma%20lucidum/DSCF0753.JPG and a shot of the stalks.Look how shiny the "varnish" is http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Ganoderma%20lucidum/DSCF0756.JPG
This is what I IDed as a Ganoderma tsugae. Can anyone confirm? http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Ganoderma%20sp.%3f%3f%3f/DSCF0750.JPG another shot http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Ganoderma%20sp.%3f%3f%3f/DSCF0752.JPG pore shot http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Ganoderma%20sp.%3f%3f%3f/DSCF0751.JPG
Now the next is some sort of lactarius It was old and starting to rot.But this thing was huge, larger than my hand. http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/large%20unknown%20lactarius/DSCF0738.JPG
The next is what i thought was a Lactarius volemus confirmation anyone? If I'm right, how do they taste? http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Lactarius%20volemus/DSCF0704.JPG http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Lactarius%20volemus/DSCF0739.JPG a shot of the latex http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Lactarius%20volemus/DSCF0741.JPG and a cap shot http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Lactarius%20volemus/DSCF0740.JPG and here is a cool orange newt that was hanging out by it http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Lactarius%20volemus/DSCF0705.JPG
The next is either Russula emetica or xerampelina.I didnt bring a specimen home with me so I cant smell test it to see if it smells of shellfish.I dont plan on eating any either way. http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Russula%20emetica%20or%20xerampelina/DSCF0731.JPG another shot http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Russula%20emetica%20or%20xerampelina/DSCF0737.JPG
and here are a few boletes I found. Two different species the first http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Two%20types%20of%20boletes/1/DSCF0722.JPG pore shot http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Two%20types%20of%20boletes/1/DSCF0723.JPG and the 2nd species http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Two%20types%20of%20boletes/2/DSCF0747.JPG pore shot http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/Two%20types%20of%20boletes/2/DSCF0748.JPG are either edible?
Thats all for the fungus.I was hunting near some local caverns called Bangor cave heres a shot of the entrance. http://codecopy.com/legendsofmyst/Mycology/7-29-05/DSCF0729.JPG

wow, excellent pictures. I don't think you have G tsugae, but I am not sure if it is lucidum or what. Very, very cool mushrooms. Amanita also nice--don't have them where I am.

Hello wallace. Thanks for the input..What throws you off of the G tsugae track? Is it lacking a characteristic? Is the genus right?
Could it be an ageing lucidum?

Your possible Caesar's Mushroom is certainly in that group of species, although I'd guess that it belongs in stirps Hemibapha rather than Casearea. There are several unnamed species in that group in North America. They are very close relatives to Amanita caesarea, which technically occurs only in the Mediterranean region.
The potential False Casear's Mushroom looks to be a related species to the above specimen, but we don't really have enough information to identify it. It's a bit old looking, so it could even be the same as one of the others but very faded.
I think your Ganoderma tsugae is another G. lucidum. My references indicate that G. tusgae occurs on conifers, but the leaf litter around the specimen doesn't show any needles.
For your possible Lactarius volemus there are a couple things you need to watch for. First, taste a piece of the cap. Break off a piece smaller than a fingernail, put it in your mouth, chew it for several seconds, and spit all of it out. It should *not* taste bitter or peppery. Second, watch the latex as it changes color - it should *not* become yellow. The latex of L. volemus changes to a cream color and will stain the gills brown. As far as edibility goes, I've never had the chance to try them - they don't grow here in Colorado. They are consistently rated as choice edibles where they're found.
I wouldn't bet on those red Russulas being either R. emetica or R. xerampelina. Try inputting the characteristics of you Russulas here and see how many species come up.
Boletes are a fairly safe group for eating. If your bolete doesn't have red or orange tubes or tube mouths, and it doesn't bruise blue, then it's not poisonous. There are a lot of inedible species that aren't ruled out that way, but you won't be able to eat them (which is why they're called inedible).
To accurately identify those boletes to species will require a bunch more information. The first one looks like a Boletus and the second seems similar to Gyroporus castaneus.
Happy mushrooming!
