consumerism conditioning #3: Hallmark

Hallmark: want a holiday, well make one for you!

everyday of the year has atleast one holiday or awareness type crap.

Secretary appreciation day....wtf? here at Hallmark, we have just the right cards to show your secretary just how much you appreciate how she makes you coffe and blows you before you go golfing.

It wouldnt be so bad if we could just easily ignore these holidays and maybe even get by with a handshake or a pat on the back, but no, we have grown accustomed to needing materialistic things to show our appreciation. You need a card, flowers, gift certificates, bonuses, bows, wrapping paper, tape, bags, receipts for return, warranties, and anything else imaginable which can show your compa$$ion and recognition.

Your a bad boyfriend, you didnt get your girlfriend anything for valentines day? no asshole, because 1) i dont need a national holiday with arranged scheduling to show my love and appreciation 2) everyday is special with her.

You didnt get anything on your birthday? yeah, i got the satisfaction of being alive and looking forward to a few more trips around the sun.

We are buying prepackaged affection and recognition and handing it to whomever, here, i spent 40 bucks, doesnt that show you how much i care? I found the perfect card for you in hallmark, who knew they had "Happy Flag Day for the lupus ridden parapalegiac" section?

This is a big one for me. I refuse to buy greeting cards for any occassion (I live by the 'golden rule' -- please don't give me any cards). I show my appreciation and affection toward people in ways that actually mean something, instead of with a $3 piece of paper. Of course, even after I show my appreciation for them with words and actions, my friends and family still resent that I didn't give them material goods for a holiday. I guess that makes me an asshole.

I don't fuck with cards either, but I have bought my wife flowers before. They are a bit of a scam as well, but they produce the desired reaction. I try to be practical about these things.

Only once in my entire life have I received flowers from a lover and I was thoroughly surprised and delighted. (Guess my tongue exercises paid off! )

Yeah...but my whole being is based around being practical. I have zero use for flowers....why would I want them. If a female (namely my wife because I don't fool with other womwn) wants my good will a verbal affirmation is quite sufficient. My wife is aware of this situation.

Dying flowers are another good reminder of impermenance. In this way they prove highly practical. Get attached to there pretty colours, and then watch them fade, wilter and die. There is a lesson to be learned in all things. Your wife syas that all she needs is a verbal affirmation, but secretly all women enjoy flowers. I suggest you go and buy your wife some flowers, and see the temporary smile it brings to her face.

No, my wife like flowers, cards, and all that good stuff...I am the one that only requires verbal affirmation. For myself I prefer living flowers in the fields over "murdered" (just joking) ones. I live next to an old graveyard with no other neighbors for a quarter mile...I am reminded of our impermanance daily. When I was younger I used to like to meditate in that graveyard as anyone rarely goes there.

And I was going to send you some marijuana flowers, but I see I would be in error.

Smoke?

They look nice in a vase and mask household odors.

For me, that goes so far, that I don't buy anyone anything for 'special' constitutional days. I even forget about the most birthdays.
But, I am there, if I am needed. And I make gifts all over the year, if I feel they would be welcomed.
I give all of myself to those, which whom I am with, every day.

Do you eat it, atleast?

Its funny how when we're brought up how we are so systematically conditioned to appreciate stupid hallmark cards... lol. I blame the residual post-WWII mentality.

There's nothing more evil than selling greeting cards. NOTHING.

Corporate branding, the linking of ideas/things/feelings to corporate symbols, is seeping in to children at a younger and younger age. Especially with so many kids being raised in front of a TV.

My girlfriend and I have dispensed with obligatory gift giving. I tried it in the beginning but she told me that it wasn't necessary. ( how lucky can a guy get?) . Neither of us is into it.
