I got 2 tubs, same brand different sizes but the small one just drops right into the big one. Can I cut the lid out of the bigger one leaving just the rim so the smaller one has a more snug fit? Also, when I put the heater in can the cord be submersed as well or is that a fire hazard. It's a submersible heater with preset temps so I can achieve 83? without much of a problem.

The one inside will float, you'll need to rig something up to hold it down into the water, it doesnt matter if its smaler. The cord can be submerged as well of course. Do not just set it at 83 though. Those heaters are designed to heat a certain amount of water, and the water temp wont be the same as the inside tub temp...you'll need to play around with it but mine when set at 70 was enough to keep it at 82ish...use a thermometer ad monitor the setup for 24 hours after its running to make sure temps are right.

OK I see what you mean. Maybe I'll solder some holes in the handles and lace some string through it. Does it have to be submersed so much as to bring water up the sides (of the smaller one)?

Okay I put my tubs together, is this correct? The smaller tub perfectly fits indside the bigger tub so I filled the big tub with water (approximately an inch or so above the 50 watt water heater). I set the heater to 77ish and put the thermometer inside of the smaller tub. I lysoled out the smaller tub and put the lid on, and I put the lid on top of the bigger one, encasing the entire incubator. If this setup sounds ok I'm going to leave it for 12-24 hours and check the temp inside the smaller tub and if its around 83 then i'm fine.
Also, can I stack jars inside or will that have an affect on an even temperature througout the inside.

An inch?....
Hmmmm...Make sure that water stays above it (the heater) , B/c if it's not submerged then it will get really hot and ultimatly break....and if that happens...You'll have some nice eletricity running through that water...woot, lol.
Be careful...Don't want to increase the chances of buring the house down
And if string doesn't werk, then use Zip ties...

Yeah the water is definitely above the heater but I guess I'll add just a little bit more. Is it ok for both tubs to have their lids on though, I mean I figured it would be more sterile this way.

Won't necessarily make it more sterile, but it should be fine.
Mine want to have a 3% solution of h202....or just pour some alcohol in the water every now and then...
Def. A good idea to clean the water out after every couple of months...
Last time I cleaned mine...It had algae in it, lol...It's a good idea to clean it out after every (or every other maybe) cycle of incubated jars (..like every month or two maybe...)

Is it ok to have them stacked though? I put them so that not all of the holes are covered to allow for some air exchange.

To stack the jars?
Yea it's ok.
I'd cover the bottom first...Then stack accordingly...
The higher you go the cooler it gets
