Army: Mental ills worsen after troops return
    #4466776 - 07/28/05 10:33 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Quote:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A survey of troops returning from the Iraq war found 30 percent had developed mental health problems three to four months after coming home, the Army's surgeon general said Thursday.

The problems include anxiety, depression, nightmares, anger and an inability to concentrate, according to Lt. Gen. Kevin Kiley and other military medical officials.

A smaller group, usually with more severe cases of these symptoms, is diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.

The 30 percent figure is in contrast to the 3 percent to 5 percent diagnosed with a significant mental health issue immediately after they leave the theater, according to Col. Elspeth Ritchie, a military psychiatrist on Kiley's staff.

A study of troops who were still in the combat zone in 2004 found 13 percent experienced significant mental health problems.

Soldiers departing a war zone are typically given a health evaluation as they leave combat, but the Army is only now instituting a program for follow-up screenings three to six months later, said Kiley, speaking to reporters.

A pilot program for the follow-up screenings, conducted on 1,000 U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq to Italy last year, found a much greater incidence of mental health problems than expected, a fact Kiley attributed to post-combat stress problems taking time to develop once the danger has passed.

Only about 4 percent or 5 percent of troops coming home from combat actually have PTSD, but many others face problems adjusting, Kiley said.

The stress of combat, seeing dead and mutilated bodies, and feeling helpless to stop a violent situation are common triggers. In Iraq truck drivers and convoy guards are developing mental health problems in greater numbers than other troops, Ritchie said, suggesting the long hours on the road constantly under threat of attack are taking their toll.

In Iraq the military has about 200 mental health experts, grouped in what the Army calls "combat stress control teams." These teams are at many posts around the country and talk with troops after battles, try to prevent suicides and diagnose troops who should be evacuated from the country because of mental health problems.

"They are worth their weight in gold," Kiley said of the teams.

Kewl. Trained and hired murderers walking the streets of America with mental illnesses. This war has done wonders for the safety of Americans in many ways.

It's humorous in a sick way how they were sent to march ro foreign land to protect the "freedoms" and "securities" of Americans, but if anything it's made everyone more unsafe.

do you want to be driving on the freeway, riding in an
elevator or waiting in line at the DMV with someone
with problems that 'include anxiety, depression, nightmares,
anger and an inability to concentrate'?

I don't think it's as dangerous as bukkake is leaping
towards, but I can't imagine a large amount of mentally
ill people wandering around society is necessarily a
good thing, in the near or long term.

Bombings in London and Madrid, aroused by the intervention in Iraq. As well as an inevitable terrorist attack predicted on American soil by the government. Returning American soldiers suffering from mental illnesses being re-integrated into society and the Army just now establishing a program to check-up on them months later. Maybe if the Army does a competent job they'll prevent another insane veteran from going on a shooting rampage ala the beltway sniper.

It's not asinine, at least I don't believe it is.

Yeah, there are. And a large percentage of them are Vietnam Vets.

I get so pissed off about the fact that we sent so many men to Vietnam, and when they came back traumatized by the horror of that war the government whisked them through insufficient hospitals and shoved them out on the streets. Now we have an entire generation of men with severe, real mental health problems like schizphrenia and delusions living on the streets. Then people get all pissed off about how many degenerates there are in our cities and assume it is just drugs and laziness.

And no one has dealt with the fact that all the men we are sending to Iraq are coming back with the same problems and are going to end up the same way. This war is costing us greatly for the rest of our lives because there is going to be another generation of neglected, traumatized vets. It goes way beyond the lives that are claimed in Iraq, which is enough to make me loathe the war to begin with.

Damn Bush.

"The 30 percent figure is in contrast to the 3 percent to 5 percent diagnosed with a significant mental health issue immediately after they leave the theater, according to Col. Elspeth Ritchie, a military psychiatrist on Kiley's staff."

Well, it's good to know that on reflection, many of them realize that there actions where incorrect. My uncle killed himself because he had to struggle with all the people he killed in Vietnam. It destroyed my father for years, and it still haunts him, as he had to make the decision pull the plug. I have learned from my ancestors mistakes, so that history will not repeat its self again in this genetic deviation.

Even if there is a draft I will NEVER GO, even in the face of death or imprisonment.

The killing of other human beings is ALWAYS wrong. No matter what anyone says, or the deluded justifcations anyone or nation trys to conjure.

Iraq is not nearly as bad as Vietnam. Chances are that as we go along in history, the War in Iraq will join the other lesser-known wars, because in terms of casualities and culture this doesn't have nearly as much as an effect Vietnam had. Unless something unforeseen and drastic happens in the future concerning the War in Iraq, like terrorists doing something completely insane, which isn't entirely unreasonable.

It's not just war. They keep the troops hopped up on speed and they all carry morphine, which they use whenever they feel like it. They breath radioactive dust and go days on end without sleeping. The only difference between Iraq and the Shroomery, is we know what we're doing.
