On guru's and teachers
    #4466131 - 07/28/05 08:05 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Recently, I've been feeling the pull to find a teacher.

Not a plant teacher. Or the world-teachers. A human one.

I can't even describe it. I've never wanted to find a mentor about anything my entire life. I've always preferred learning most things on my own.

But now I feel this pull for one. And it's very powerful. I'm not freaking out about it and looking through the yellow pages or anything.

I'm just sort of calmly waiting for my teacher to cross my path. I figure I'll do things I'm meant to do and perhaps I'll meet someone along the way.

I think part of the reason why I have this pull for a teacher is because I've reached a point in my personal spirituality that's difficult to dicuss with other people.

On the flip side, there is a part of me that is hesitant about getting a teacher because of "brain-washing." What if this teacher is nothing like what I expect and tries to teach me things that in my heart I disagree with? The image that flares up at that sentence is that of my father.

Then I think, well, my father wasn't able to brainwash me even as a little kid. I always knew what I did and didn't agree with.

I feel my sense of self is strong enough that a teacher will be beneficial for me

I guess I'm babbling now.

Any advice... I realize that teachers and "gurus" are not thought highly of at the Shroomery.

But nonetheless I have this pull to come into contact with one and I felt I had to articulate it.

The only people I'm recommending are the Drikung Dzogchen.

Follow your heart.  Whatever you choose will be exactally what you need to know. :sun:

I completely agree, Icelander. And that's usually the course I take. I always listen to my heart first. Which is why the message it's giving me now "find a teacher" has been kind of disconcerting.

Have you tried going to a Scientology center? They have many wise gurus there willing to lead you to a Clear state of being.

If you need a Guru look in the mirror. If you want a teacher look around you. Everyone has something to teach.

On a serious note though, have you tried reading philosophy? And I'm not talking about boring, stereotypical philosophy, but the interesting philosophers- the ones where while you're reading them, you'll stop for a few minutes just to think about the past few paragraphs.

For this is as close to gurus and teachers as most people will get. Most teachers you're bound to found, if not all, will be useless.

That's a good point. Recently, I've been talking to myself and have found that I know more then I think I do.

The problem with a Guru is that you must take them on faith...with my luck I would spend 20 years as an apprentice to a psychopath who thought he was Jesus or something. If a person will teach you something without requiring your total devotion it is worth learning. If they want a disciple look out...

The REAL lowdown on teachers:

They are not there to mollycoddle you; to make you feel special and warm. They are not gentle and kindly old people. They are there to rip you asunder; to destroy the false image you have had about yourself.

You will not recognize their wisdom for it is counter-intuitive to everything you have learned and believed thus far. If you could recognize it, you would not need to learn it. They are viscious predators with your ego as prey. They are there to expose your bullshit and lies, your selfishness, your greed, your weakness, your fear and to make you tremble until you totally surrender.

Are you ready for THAT!?

ooo I want a teacher! (seriously)

I've felt a similar yearning as of late, as my 'progress' (whatever that means) seems to have come to a halt. I think I need a fresh perspective on things, of course nothing involving complete devotion

Sounds good.

I wish I met more people like that in real life. Yet most people have the philosophical viciousness of lambs.

If that's where following your heart takes you then I support your decision. You will learn from the experience no doubt.

I only poke fun at your statement because you make it seem as if every decision is equal, which I disagree with. "Following your heart" sounds nice on paper, but is a highly vague directive. If that's where following your heart takes you then I support your decision. You will learn from the experience no doubt.

Your constant message is one of love and trust which I applaud, but it must be grounded as well.
