i think my cakes are dry or something, no fruits yet
    #4465767 - 07/28/05 08:35 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

i have 5 cakes now in my terrarium. one has been there since july 13, the other 4 have been in there since july 17. i keep the temperature between 73 and 75 F all day long, i keep the humidity in the high 90s (95-100) and i fan at least 3 times a day and more if time allows me to. i keep a 12/12 light cycle on them. im not seeing any pins on any of the cakes. i figured by now, 15 days later, i would at least see something coming from the cake that i put in on the 13th. i waited an extra 5 days from the time i noticed that the entire cake was covered in myc. so im pretty sure they are all fully colonized.

one thought that occured to me was that the cakes were dry... so i though about doing a cold shock dunk & roll on them.

any suggestions? its approaching the 3 week mark since birth and im just getting a little worried.

no i didnt cold shock prior to birth. i took em straight from the incubator to the terrarium.

i dont think they have any contamination. theres nothing unusual on any of the cakes.

although, when i took the last 4 cakes out of their jars, it looked like they might have had cobweb mold on the area closest to the lid. but im not 100% sure. i didnt have a very thick layer of dry verm on top, in fact some of the jars had a pretty thin layer of dry verm. so i figured it was just myc growing up into it.

any suggestions?

the verm usually makes my shitake mycellium all crappy and stringy looking as it tries to stretch with nothing there for it to eat. i bet its just normal for whichever species you're growing as well

I was in the same situation as you on my first grow. Over a week with no pins. I cold shocked/dunked for 24 hours, lowered the temp to where yours is now, and made sure the humidity was always 99%. They pinned, and fruited shortly after.

And before dunking, my cakes were very dry to the touch, like clay or something.
