equipment

I bought a pressure cooker today for only $20.00 at walmart but it is only a 4.2 quart but gets to 15 psi and can fit 3 pint jars in it...Also, I purchased some mason jars, wide mouth. but there pints not half pint like I had read they should be. Does anyone know if that is gonna be a problem? Also, I could'nt find any Vermiculite at any local stores can I use something to substitute?? I found BRF already just need Verm...

I thought Walmart sold vermiculite?

Although I hate the fact that I shopped there.. I can't ignore the amount of money I saved.  I bought a 12 pack of 1/2 pint jars today along with some measuring cups - came out to be a little under 10 bucks.  Now thats a deal.

bigger jars=longer colonization times=more chance of contams
verm is kinda hard to find for people just go to a nursary and call beforehand so it isnt a wasted trip, youll find it.

I've seen vermiculite at Home Depot. If you make this a hobby the first thing you will wish you had is a bigger PC. Anything under 8 quarts just doesn't seem to be worth it IMO. You can't use mason jars if you are going to be fruiting cakes, but with grains (or if you plan on casing your cakes) you will be fine.

Doh, I see you DID get wide-mount and not the kind I was thinking of. Pint jars should be fine and you will be glad you got them since you can only fit in 3 jars at a time.

My ace doesnot have verm. Neither does Home depot, or walmart. A garden center does, but ts fine verm. I really hate fine verm. I like ordering online, get good verm, big bags, cheap prices. But if your only doing a grow or two..

if you find verm make sure its horticalture (SP), for plant growing, if you get it from a hardware store. they also use verm to blow into concreat walls for insolation.. they would probly contain some anti fungle stuff and all that bad stuff..

This is what my ace hardware has, and I've seen this same brand at many different garden stores. I like it. It has chunky and fine pieces in it.
