It is supposed to appear almost as big as the moon here soon because it is so close.

Edit: The following information is incorrect. Thank you moog for catching this. The event occured in 2003, not 2005. -Seuss

I don't have the source for this, but:

Quote:

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular! This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide.

At a modest 75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month.

That close approach to Mars took place in August of 2003. For some reason this story is recirculating the internet. But trust me, that happened two years ago, when the HST snapped this beauty:

Odd... guess that is why I didn't have a source for the post. Thanks for the correction. Time to head to nasa.gov for a while and see if I can find something from the experts. (The ones that sent me the posted note are seriously into astronomy... they have a little observatory they built in their back yard... I am surprised that they are wrong on something like this, but then, everybody makes a mistake from time to time...)

Yes, moog is correct and I was mistaken... from Nasa:

Again, thank you for the correction, moog.

So is this or is this not happening. Everyone at work for some reason is hyped up about it, everyone is talking about it, and i work with a bunch of rednecks, i dont know how in the hell they heard about it.

I told them all that the shroomery said it was a lie. I hope i myself am not lying!

Well, if you are lying, then you have a good source to back up the lie... NASA.  See my previous post with the link to the nasa press release dated 2003 located on a nasa web server.

Wow, I saw that in a movie once... dark city.

I suggest kicking him straight in the nuts, then letting him go loose in a prison.
He'd be able to kill some shit there.
ANd he'd (hopefully) be trapped.
I thank this thread for bringing Mars to my skyward attention again, and curse you all for getting me exicted.

Gotta pay more attenion.....strange shit is flying around lately.
Meteor shower data anyone?

You can see Mars often, it's just a bright big red star.
It never was and never will be as big as the moon though.
