Ship's cook indicted on charges of smuggling drugs July 28, 2005 - nj.com
CAMDEN -- A cook aboard the ship "Snow Bird" was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday for allegedly smuggling nearly 20 pounds of cocaine into a Gloucester City shipping terminal.
On July 12, the vessel arrived in Gloucester City and was boarded by customs and border protection officers who conducted a search of the ship. During their search, officers located a number of plastic bags containing approximately 8.7 kilograms of a white powdery substance in the room belonging to Santos Sanchez-Arevalo, 48, of Honduras. They were later determined to contain cocaine.
According to a complaint, only Sanchez-Arevalo had access to that room.
The suspect stated that he agreed to transport the cocaine from Guyana to an individual in the United States for $10,500, police said. He allegedly told police that he did not know the identity of the person who was supposed to receive the drugs.
