IRA says 'armed campaign over'
    #4463592 - 07/28/05 08:20 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/4720863.stm

Quote:

"All IRA units have been ordered to dump arms. All Volunteers have been instructed to assist the development of purely political and democratic programmes through exclusively peaceful means. Volunteers must not engage in any other activities whatsoever.

"The IRA leadership has also authorised our representative to engage with the IICD to complete the process to verifiably put its arms beyond use in a way which will further enhance public confidence and to conclude this as quickly as possible."

Some good news in the War on Terror.

The last bomb attack was in May 2001 against a London post office (I think), that was claimed by 'The Real IRA' a splinter group that will probably not consider itself bound by this agreement. There have been no IRA bomb attacks either by the IRA or by splinter groups since 9/11.

I don't think its coincidence that the bombings stopped after 9/11, the world changed on that day.

There have been IRA killings until very recently, the most notable of late was the killing of Robert McCartney this year.

just heard this on BBC World while i was eating lunch.

sounds good to me - hopefully both sides will be able to maintain this peace - and Irish nationalists will be able to use this for some bargaining power.

I agree with krishna, hopefully both sides will come to peace and maintain it without the use for violence.

But it is a big step forward for the IRA

The last bomb attack was in May 2001

I thought the IRA ceasefire started in 1994, failed in 1996 and then restarted again in 1997 and held ever since.

Didn't they blow up bombs this year? Except they told the police when they would go off. No one was injured, they just sent a message.

While I was in Ireland last year, I was told that the IRA was pretty much defunct but still a little unwilling to put down their arms, although they weren't using them.
