colonization

my friend innoculated 11 1/2 pint brf jars a couple day ago.. unfortunately he doesn't have a heating device handy, right now they are at a pretty constant 70 degrees F. is this warm enough for them to colonize, or does he need to heat them? if so, what's the best way? he was planning on getting a heating pad and putting it under my terrarium humidified with perlite, and putting the jars in there with no light. would that be ok?
THANKS!

70 is warm enuf. If you use a heating pad for an incubator, I reccomend putting it on top.

ok the jars are now sitting at around 85 fahreinheit.. my friend wanted to know, does anyone have any idea how long it takes to see the first signs of mycelium growth in the jars on average? this is b+ growing in 1/2 brf jars. also, what will it look like? is checking on them too much bad for them? :-)

Some dude told me about an easy peasy incubator setup. You get a big Coleman cooler that has a removable drain screw. Get a 50Watt aquarium heater that allows you to change the temp. A couple of thermometers and a big pickle jar. Put the Aquaium heater in the pickle jar filled with distilled water and some peroxide. Calibrate it to run at about 80-85* (this part is a real pain, it takes a little experimenting.) You insert the Aquarium heater through the drain hole in the cooler then stick it in the pickle jar with a thermometer so you can see the temp. Then stick a couple of thermometers inside the cooler to measure the cooler temp every so often. Adjust the temp gauge of the Aquarium heater till you get the cooler tem to be about 84*. Then stick your jars or whatever you have your inoculum in and let them grow. If you incubate the mycelium grows a lot faster and you should see white patches start showing up where you stuck the needle in after about 2 or 3 days (Depending on the strain.) My friend's pet mule used this trick and has started seeing growth of PES Amazonian mycelium after 2.5 days.

Purrrr,
