you would think with the vast amount of money they have at their disposal they could make some progress.

Hardly does NASA get vast amounts of money. Money should be diverted from the military (which gets VAST amounts of money) into education and science programs (such as NASA) so that they can actually get things done.

Yeah I could see how that went wrong.

They let the broom pusher kid foam the tank so he could tell mom he helped build a rocket.

> Hey, how about you try rocket science and then come back and tell me it's easy.

I have never worked for NASA, but I have worked with NASA on a satellite program and I know that it (rocket science) is most certainly not easy.  NASA is staffed with some of the brightest people in the world and they know what they are about.  If they are having trouble fixing a problem, then the problem is extremely difficult.  As Daba said,.

> They let the broom pusher kid foam the tank so he could tell mom he helped build a rocket.

Hardly.  Spend some time around NASA before making such a stupid comment.  The people I know at NASA take their jobs extremely seriously.  They understand that lives are a stake and that they could be the one person that causes loss of life through sloppy work.  These people are dedicated and meticulous when it comes to their job.

This explains why they spent a billion dollars to not fix the problem.

It just doesn't seem like a good idea to use foam to insulate a space shuttle.

Could you pass that along to NASA for me?

I agree with delta9. Considering the size of the US budget, the amount that NASA gets is just a drop in the bucket. And taking into account what we get back in return, I think it is money well spent. I trust this situation with the foam is minor. And I hope for a safe return of the shuttle and its' crew.

(btw, I am moving this thread to S&T where it is more appropriate)

With reasonable funding NASA could do absolutly amazing things. Trouble is with "little" they get all they can afford to do it stupid shit 30 miles away from the surface.

If they got military-like budget (like I assume they did during the cold-war-ish era) they could put men on mars in a matter of years, not decades.

Other things are just more important to the US and the rest of the world than exploring the universe, like fighting eachother. I mean, at least we should be fighting other planets :p ...

Yeah, we should just go bomb Mars and Venus for the hell of it.
Straight NUKE some areas.
Bet that'd get some funding.

The Shuttles are older than most of you folks.

They did a good job, now it's time to build a new fleet and park the old ones in museums before they all get exploded.

Fer real. When you have to go amongst the populace to find spare parts for the computer systems, you KNOW you need to get your shit replaced.
But a full redesign/manufacturing effort will be costly as fuck.....think we're going to fund it?

How much money are we spending on farm subsidies and corporate welfare every year?
