6 quarts of colonized wbs, what do i do w/ them?
    #4460716 - 07/27/05 04:03 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

ok, sorry in advance for the mundane question, but here it goes. this is my first try growing with a birdseed substrate in quart jars, and i have 6 of them nearing full colonization. I plan on making casings out of these, with coir or peat, but i was hoping somebody might give me an experienced suggestion on how many casings to make out of 6 quarts, and what sized containers i might want to use. With what you guys have seen, how deep should i make the substrate/casing layer? thanks

I used 1/2 inch coir on the bottom, one inch WBS, 3/4 inch coir on top and got the flush in my sig.

That means the 2 dollar, "sweater box" size sterlite containers got 2 pints WBS each. That's just one way of doing it though, some would say put more, and they're probably right, too.

To maximize yield, case each quart individually, between a top and bottom casing layer.

To GET even bigger yields, these can be used to spawn to pasteurized aged manure. More substrate more yield.

I guess another way to word that would be:

When casing WBS, what would be the ideal depth for the birdseed and for the casing layers, in order to maximize both the first flush, and more importantly, the total yield per quart of WBS?

I'd also like to hear the best answer to that...

Being an engineer I would suggest that you figure out how many sq inches are in half a quart (~29in^3). Then assume you are going to make a 2in substrate.
That means you can probably fill an area of roughly 14inches.
Whether you go with something like 3in x 5in or 2in x 7in is really a matter of preference. Hope this helps.

EDIT: You can probably assume that you will be using more than a half a quart and that the substrate will not flow like a liquid so use something slightly bigger than you calculate.

Thanks, I'll probably just double-up and use 2 quarts per sweaterbox. Since one quart produced a one inch sub layer, 2 will produce the desired 2 inch depth.

G/L with your endeavors!!
