More like "well shaped" or "formy".
Avoid using this word while talking to your latin-speaking feminist girlfriend

Formosa is also the early name for the island of Taiwan, given by the early Portugese sailors, and meaning in that language 'beautiful'. presumably the Portugese word is derived from the Latin.....

anyway, nice pics, ninja

I would avoid the white A. muscaria, too many deadly lookalikes.

Whites ones could also be A. citrina. I find them together frequently in north Georgia.
Amanita citrina's stipe is always hollow, and smells pungently of raw potatoes.
Pretty muscarias.

I wouldn't ever put those in my mouth. I mean, some people might like the Amanita experience, but I value my liver too much to take the chance with those mushrooms.

Do those mushrooms have concentric rings on the volva? This isn't really A. muscaria season in the US. They're a fall mushroom.

What's your general location, ninja? Seems a little early for amanita, but that only makes me happy!!!

Nice pics.

Amanitas lose their color as they age, to whoever was wondering...

Gumby,
I usually find A. Muscaria Var. Formosa in october, but they are around in the summer also. Many claim that the summer fruits have higher concentrations of ibotenic acid/muscimol than the fall ones.

I thin the white ones could be panthrena too, definately not the same. Id steer clear of ingesting the white ones too, but the others are fly argaric as you stated. Ive also found them this early in the season as well just not in large numbers, I like to peel the caps of the red and orange varieties and dry the skins to smoke. Gives you a very nice mellow high and is in my opinion very enjoyable.

What the hell are ya'll talking about? Those aren't panterinas. As someone who has hunted and dried and ingested amanitas for years, I can tell you with foremost certainty that those tannish caps are the color of var. formosa drying.

You're right, they do seem to fruit when they want to.
