    #4459271 - 07/27/05 10:01 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

How much water should I add to 12 oz of perlite? Should the lid of my FC be see through?

You want about 3-4inch of perlite and the water to sit about 1inch below the level of the perlite.
Ie if perlite is 4 inch deep
make water 3inch deep, just look along the side of the container to see when to stop pourin after you have already stuck the perlite in.

Lid dosent have to be see through but its good if it is somewhat transparent. If it is see through will allow you to see whats going on without havin to open it all the time.

there is really no need to have water sitting in your fc with the perlite unless you are using a pmp.
if you are not using a pmp then just soak the perlite for a while and then drain it off until it is just dripping a little. perlite works better with more surface area exposed to air than when soaking in water. as it has many micropores and doesn't actually absorb the water, it just holds it in these micropores.
another reason for this is that the perlite will have a tendancy to float and placing cakes directly on it can lead to them tipping over or sinking into the perlite.
if you are using it in a pmp then you will need to put some kind of screen over the perlite to give your cakes stability.
the lid should have some kind of window in it so the light comes in from the top. this way the shrooms will grow up to the light instead of just growing in all directions. if the sides of the tub are clear you can cover them with something or paint them so that no light enters the sides at the cake level.

good luck
peace
