ID Panaeolus foenisecii?
    #4455871 - 07/26/05 02:02 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

hello.
me and my friends was outside and found some mushrooms. we looked around on the net for some pics and found some that really looked like the ones we had found. we think it is the Panaeolus foenisecii.

we live in sweden and we found them just on our lawn in the grass. they are 4-6 cm in length and the cap is brown with a darker edge and sometimes a darker top.
we now have taken some pics of the ones we found. is this the real deal?

very thankful for help in IDing this mushroom.

Taking a sporeprint would be the best way for us to be sure as to what it is in this case. I cant really see the gill structure perfectly from the pictures, but they look like they may resemble that of a Pan Subb (which is active). There are also a few other things that may point to non-foeness, but really its hard to tell 100% for sure with just some pictures. Take a print of it and see what comes out.

*edit - make the post...get a drink and bathroom...post it and got beaten AGAIN >< haha.

Cut the cap off near where the stem meets the cap. Put the cap gills down on a white piece of paper (although some other colors may be helpful to print on, especially when the sporeprint is white). Put something over top of the cap to prevent them from being blown away or hit or something. I rarely ever do that, but its probably a good idea, and should probably be required if you really want a good print. Wait about an hour or longer, and see what you get!

Oh, and check out the FAQ and the hunting guides and stuff around here sometime. They get a lot of pretty cool info in there that could possibl help ya out .

The idea with a spore print is that you'll leave the mushroom caps on the paper long enough to get a heavy deposit of spores so you can see what color they are in mass. It's a good idea to leave them overnight so you can get a heavy deposit. For identification purposes spore prints need to be done on white paper.

Happy mushrooming!

so, It's supposed to be a black spore print. meaning all the spores on the paper make a black mass right? so that's it? just confirm that it's black and then you know it is Panaeolus foenisecii? just the color that matters? I read about some lookalike that had brown spore prints. mine actually look black.

The sporeprint for Pan Foe may very well look black at first. It will infact, though, be a very dark brown. If it is jet black, however, it will be a Pan Subb (pretty much).

Here is a picture of a bunch of prints that all really look black at first, but as you can see the true subb print (edited in on the right) i actually much more black, and you can kinda see a bit of brown almost in the other ones.

A picture of your sporeprint could also help us throw in our opinions if you arent sure what color it is .

Once again, black sporeprint means that do not have a Pan. foenisecii (which is not active at probably not what you would hope for).
