Do we have any idea who discovered that burning something then inhaling its fumes did "something"

Yeah I was watching 'Dancing with Wolves' today and when the Native Americans would smoke with the peace pipe it made me wonder where they found that.

Anyone have guru or anything to figure it out?

It was discovered when some culture (can't remember who?) burned it for warmth inside a domicile.

There was a thread about this a while ago.
