identification please help!
    #4451294 - 07/25/05 05:45 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

i live on a farm and our neighboors and us share the land they had horses. my neighboors recetly moved out the the horses pasture has become home to many mushrooms. i picked up a bunch and i think they are Psilocybe cubensis but one weird thing about them is when i was was doing a spore print and cutting away the stem from the cap the end of the stem instantly turned a light red color. they have every characteristic of being a Psilocybe cubensis except for the red thing. i just i do not have access to a camera right now but i will post some pictures a little later tonight when i get my camera back.

they definitely aren't cubes if they bruise red.

some species of lepiota and agaricus will bruise red and can occur in pastures though.

if they were cubensis there would be absolutley no bruising any color besides blue.

Try checking for a nipple on the top of the cap.

Yeah...those gills are pretty darn white. A cube's gills wouldnt look that color.

Im not sure what it is, but I can pretty confidently say that its not safe to eat (mainly just off the white gills).

it appears as though you have collections from two seperate families; Lepiotaceae and Agaricaceae.

the smaller, younger specimens with the more robust stems and rounded, unopened caps apear to be Agaricus. these should have been the ones that printed brown.

the specimens with the conicaly shaped caps Look to be Lepiotas and you will want to print them seperately.

i would like you to tell me wether specimens from the first or second group bruised reddish. if both exibited bruising in some specimens, please include that in your reply.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

the larger group bruised reddish and had a spore print of brown. the little ones printed a weird brownish redish color. i had one that has brown gills and a brown spore print.
