Dry Straw Pasturization
    #4450601 - 07/25/05 03:32 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Several threads on doing poo dry...

I read awwhile back about BH thinking that the reason his fermentated was because he pasturized his poopie dry...

I can't remeber why he thought it messed up, I think it was b/c he thought that the N content was to high...But I'm unsure as to how that'd benefit fermentation...

Anyways, I was wondering if pasturizing straw dry would have the same ill effects....

If no-one can really say then i'll just try it out and see how it goes...

But i'm not sure about how to get it wet...lol...

After I pasturize, would I dunk it in water over nite?...

Doesn't seem like a great idea but i've got time and i'd like to try it out.

TIA

-Gnostic

You'll have to pasturize in water IG. I use 1 cup of lime and bleach both per 12 gallons of hot tap water. No need to heat up water at all.If you use 1 flat of the bail, it will fit perfectly into a bath of 12 gallons in a 31 gallon Rubbermaid bin. Allow the staw to pasturize for 2 hours and then ring it out with your hands and load it into your fruiting container. This pasturization tek gives you about 2 weeks of clean straw in order to get it colonized without problems. I use a rig like this to keep the straw submerged.

Why do you have to use water...?

I've done straw several times...And a foaf asked me the questions that i'm posting now.

I now HOW to pasturize...I just don't know WHY it has to be done in water....

That's what i'm looking for...

Tnkx for the reply btw

There are mold spores that need to be germinated and then killed off from hot H20 and bleach. Something that a dry pasturization will not provide.

I've never used h2o2 or Bleach in any of my pasturizing...

Straw doesn't carry the same (poo as well) endospores as things like wbs and rye....

That's probably why they're sterilyed...

And we only Pasturize straw and poo b/c they carry ones that die off before 170F...

I had some great point and then went blank, lmfao.

Oh well.

straw also contains endo spores just as the grain does.
that's why i recommend removing the leaf and the knuckles from straw.
but does anyone ever listen to me? nooooooOOOOOOoooooo, they just complain about straw being contaminant prone.

assuming that it would work, you would still need to hydrate the straw with sterile water under aseptic conditions,so what would be the point?

Well "dry" pasteurization isnt dry, you still soak the whatever, then drain it after its prepared and get it to the right content, then load the substrate with correct water content into bags. It works fine.

By the way, BH later relized that it wasnt the pasteurization method that was his problem, but his lack of heat dissapation/gas exchange during the spawn run.

Growing with bags, start to finish (including my new grain and substrate prep)

Water is a lot more efficient at transferring heat than air is. It will also transfer it more evenly throughout the poo/straw.

Air is a good insulator and doesn't transfer heat very well (If it did, you couldn't stick your hand in a 400 degree oven to take your pizza out)

If you use air, the outside of your poo/straw will get a lot hotter than the inside.
