pressure cook the filter for a HEPA?
    #4450488 - 07/25/05 02:37 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

I recently moved from a house that I was cultivating fungi in when I first started learning. I do believe that I contaminated that whole house in the process.
Since moving I have cleaned EVERYTHING from the old house before bringing it into the new house. The problem I am now having is that EVERY liquid culture that I have done since movinghas contaminated shortly after incubating, OR after I have used it to inoculate rye jars with. (consequentally contaminating all jars of rye) I had taken apart the whole HEPA filter and cleaned it with lysol. I was wondering if it is possible to remove the actual filter from the unit and PC it to sterilise it. I am thinking that maybe it has spores in it and when I run it to sterilise the air, it is actually spraying spores? It is a new filter and if it is the cause of my contaminations and it is not cleanable, I'll just simply replace it.
I am waiting on some new syringes that I ordered from a shroomery sponsor to arrive now so I can try this all over again.
and helpful comments or input would be greatly appreciated.

i'm almosdt dead positive that would ruin the filter. It really sounds like your contam problems are coming from somewhere else like inoculation or when you are sterilizing things.

Yea I think hepa filters are too big to PC too. Maybe you have a small filter or a large PC, but that's just my thought.
Take care

Are you working in a carpeted area? Or does your new house have a lot of carpet in general?

If so tear out the carpet and replace with wood floors or shampoo all the carpet in the house. Also turn off your air conditioning etc etc. I don't use any filters I just make sure there isn't any air circulating

PC'ing the filter would kill most spores, but if there are any Endospores in it they would need to be germinated first before a PC run would be 100% effective and that would ruin the filter.
I would just give the filter a really really light mist of straight alchohol and it would dry in a few seconds.
Or you could just buy a new filter if ya got the money...

Good luck,
Take care n be safe...
