anyone tried manure with different shells?
    #4449737 - 07/25/05 09:56 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

i went to my local agway and saw this soil there with lobster and oyster shells, and some fish bones and clay from the beach. it's mixed up in composted horse and cow manure, the guy said it's certified organic and i noticed that it was packaged on a farm in my hometown. i was thinking i might experiment with it, test it with a small amount to see if the myc will colonize. anyone seen manure like this before? any experienced with lobster shells/fish bones?

ive used this type of potting mix in my rose garden. the shells give a heavy dose of P and K (Phosphorus and Potasium) for blooming i'm not sure how they would react with mushrooms.

aren't mushrooms (the fruitbody) composed of a substance called "chiton", which is the same thing crab and lobster shells are made of.

It sounds like adding them to a proper substrate would make a good experiment.

However, just because an animal's body is composed primarily of one substance, doesn't mean it uses those chemical elements directly. For example, cows are not made out of grass. (literally speaking)

Test it out, take pictures and make a grow log on it. Everybody loves to see experiments here!
