slow ass poo

Well I got some tenn stud pre-pasteurized substrate and its colonizing very slowly. Theres a few small spots on the bottom an like one near the top but other than that none of the middle is colonizing. I used 5 quarts to spawn 8lbs of poo, the grain wasn't mixed too great but you can still see it all through the poo. Its been almost a week now, I shouldn't have to incubate this right? Its 5in deep, and I was going for a double tub, the room temp is about 70, sometimes hotter, but not more than 80. Any ideas?

bump, anyone got some suggestions on what to do? I might take it outside and make a bed once it grows a bit more, if it doesn't pick up a lot real fast...

There are to many variables - of - what might be wrong.
You INCUBATE a spawned substrate. What are you doing?
A picture would help.

Dude im new and i know that it should be INCUBATED. It is so slow because you have it at 70. It needs to be at 80-84. It will work at 70 as far as i have read but it says it will be really slow. Also how long did it take that poo to get to you. Im going to order some here soon.

I would suggest you take it up to at least a consistant 80-84 degrees. 70 is a bit low IMO. I haven't got any other negative feedback.

I was under the impression that during the spawn run of h/poo, it generates heat, and you didn't need to specifically incubate it. I thought room temperature was OK for spawning h/poo for bulk... In fact I think I remember agar saying that somewhere? Maybe I'm wrong?

you can incubate a large h/poo substrate at room temps, if the room temp is close to 74/76 F, as they most often generate several degrees of heat - by themselves. Which will usualy put them at the 80/82 F range.

Thanks agar I knew I read it somewhere-- http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rue#Post4371250
Great post by the way. How much would you say would be enough to fall in the definition of bulk? Well, enough to generate the needed heat?

Sorry to hear that lucky. I just started my first grain to poo adventure and i was shocked at how fast the mycelium takes over. I didn't use the pre-sterilized stuff. It actually was quite easy (and free) to collect the poo myself and pastuerize it in the oven. Maybe you could try that in the future? Good luck.

I was figuring on room temp being warm enough cause I've read that the poo generates heat. Maybe my grow is too small(10"x13"x5")for it to generate enough heat. My room does have an ac on so I'll probably relocate the tub and post back in a few days. hotshotaj the poo got to me real quick, can't remember exactly how long, 3-5 days. I hear tenn stud is good shit...lol, so I hope giving it a bit of heat will help. Thanks for the input, ttyl.

5 quarts of spawn on 8lbs of poo is a hell of allot of spawn. I'm thinking this could affect the poo's ability to heat itself during the run. That is why I recommended the higher incubation temperature. But hey I've been wrong before

Must have been the heat, I wrapped it up in a warm blanket yesterday and put it in the warmest part of the room. Today I took a peek at it and the myc was already picking up. My quarts were only like half full so it was only like 3-4 full ones.

I'm glad to see things are improving. IMO 1 good size quart per 5lbs is sufficient--Good luck

Well I took another peak in and theres lots of condensation and a sweet smell so it looks like this one went bunk. I dunno what I did but I haven't had a prob with anything else. Casing from the other jars from that batch are looking good and about to fruit, ones eeven got some pins. The only thing I can think to do is to relocate outside...in our terrible for mushrooms weather. I'm gonna give it a day or two, I hope if the myc picks up enough I can give it a good mix and load it into an outdoor bed. Anyone got other suggestions?

I TOLD you not to heat it!
Thats why you smell the sweet smell, it fermented. Yes luna is right, more spawn changes the ability to heat itself, but it makes it heat up more, not less....when you wrapped it up in the blanket (limited gas exchange and heat disapation) and heated it, you killed it..does it feel warm on the container too? Particular the center of the container on the bottom? I didnt notice how much spawn you used, or I wouldve said your problem was likly when the temps got up to 80, growth slowed because it was too hot with all the spawn acitivity.
I have yet to have a poo container recover from fermentation, but sometimes the parts that are colonized will fruit. You'd need to cool it off though. Other then that, you can throw it outdoors, but it'll likly not do much, or toss it. Sorry

The growth never really started, I have two small spots about the size of a half dollar on the bottom. Those spots are clumps of grain and its not really colonizing the poo, just spreading to the other grain in the clump. The container never got warm, always felt cool to the touch, even after unwrapping it from the blanket. If heat was the problem it was probably a lack of it, I like to keep my room nice and cool. I highly doubt that I over heated it and gas exchange shouldn't have been the problem at this point right? You arn't supposed to fan when the poo is colonizing right? Well keep the replies coming please, I'd like to try to pin point the problem so I can try again.

Not air exchange, GAS exchange. You dont need to fan, but release of built up gases is VERY important, and without it, you'll get fermentation every time.
And by the way I've had little 5 pound tubs, with a quart of spawn, die from to much heat when the temps are 75. Especially if there werent enough holes in the foil covering the casing. If the temps were getting up to 80 as you said in the first post, they certainly could die from heat with all that spawn.
