perlite raises humidity in the whole chamber or just the area under the cake?

lets say you only had one cake in a huge chamber (hypothetically), does it help to have moist perlite all over or is the cake only hydrated by the perlite it sits on?

How would you tell if a cake is too dry in terms of just eyeballing it?

You know what damp sand looks like when it's too dry to hold together? Kind of like that...

The cake is sitting in a box of humidity, and that's what humidifies it. It is anyway if it's all covered in perlite. If you only had one cake you could use a smaller container but their should be perlite all over the bed of the container.
Take care
