Actually my setup is in my tiny little closet.  The little shelf in the bottom is just the perfect size for the 10 gal tank and this right next to it, I could just have it humidify the whole closet rather than hooking tubes up to an aquarium, giving the mushrooms access to far more fesh air than what's enclosed in the tank.  Any advice welcome

That is the same unit I have. I can't leave it on 24/7 or an inch of water pools in my tins, it puts out soo much.

If you let it humidify your closet the humidity will probably promote mold growing in your walls etc and esp if you have carpet. Think about when you leave wet clothes in the hamper and they get all mildewy

So should I put it on the lowest mist flow then? Also, since that's taking care of the humidity, what's taking care of the heat and what do I use to fruit on? Can I just put the cakes on lids and sit them on the bottom of the aquarium or should I cover it with something?

you'll probably want a timer as well as a low flow, especialy if you're only
humidifying a small area like a fish tank

How long should I keep in on each day then? And I still need heat somehow, I don't want a cool mist bringing down temps and slowing fruiting...

Hey newb,

Make sure the heat is going to be too low before you worry about it

Yes, you need a timer. I use it on low and it's still way too much. After 10 minutes with it on my big rubbermaid is thicker than the rain forests I've been to on their most humid days. I could only find a timer that was on/off for 30 minutes at a time (best resolution i could find i meant) and it's kinda still a little too much for my taste. I wish I knew where i could get a 15 on style one

timing is something you'll have to experiment with, you'll need a good hygrometer
as for the temps, dont worry about it too much, a simple derop of a few degrees
can allow for fruiting, I've fruited cambos and equadors in low 80's temps

My closet will most likely be in the 70-80? range with a cool mist humidifer. Man, I didn't think it would require so many gadgets for a terrarium. I guess I'll try a half hour a day at first and see how it goes from there. I read to spread vaseline over the top of the tank to prevent drippage on the cakes, so maybe that'll help a little. How much do hygrometers go for?

A good one, that works and keeps on working in very humid conditions, will run between $20-$40.

it requires  a hand spray bottle and a piece of cardboard, you're the one wanting to complicate things... :smirk:

Is all of it necessary though? I mean if you say the temp is fine, won't running the humidifier for say, 20 minutes at a time be sufficient to add humidity? I'm sure it will remain humid once I turn it off and go to work, sleep, etc. right? Sorry for so many ?'s but as you know this is my first ever attempt and I want to get off on the right foot for further grows.

no, using perlite and temps in the low 80's, a little hand misting and air
exchange is all thats needed, the evaporation of the water from the perlite
will be heavier than at say 70F, I'm not saying you wont see a few problems
with higher temps but I've had some good luck in the low 80's with minimal care.

sure but it could be too much or too little humidity at that interval, 20 minutes every 3 hours could be optimal, a timer will control that pretty well
but monitoring for several days and adjustments are required

Well I'll use the perlite for a while and see how it works out for me. I'm kinda pissed, I already trashed the packaging to the humidifier so Wal-Mart prolly won't take it back if I wanted a refund.

Nevermind, I'm going to exchange it, I found the box in tact so I'll prolly get a refund.  I guess instead I'll buy a spray bottle...maybe they'll have a pressure cooker for a decent price too

Refund went smoothe, but their PC's were all returns; busted up boxes, plus they were too small :frown:  Couldn't for the life of me find a sprayer OR a mister...

I dunno I'm definitely going to look around for a good PC though, I just don't know where else would be good to find less expensive one.

PC is more valuable than a humidifier, I think. I like the Presto over the Mirro. Rumor has it WallyMart sells seconds in Mirro. An 8 qt Presto will hold a quart bottle. All Single rocker Prestos go to 15 lbs. Single Mirros go to 10 in the smaller units. (black rocker) chrome rocker goes 5,10 and 15. (please bare with me here) Presto does not publish their pressures, so it took effort to find out. Stainless is better than aluminum but costs a bunch more. 'All Americans' are the top of the line, and magical! Ya can get a 20 quart Presto on ebay for very little, watch the shipping. Every fall, local state extension services will test pressure cookers for proper pressure reading and operation for free. Call em up, it is worth it on the larger ones. Don't forget to add 1/8 cup vinegar to the water in the cooker to combat hard water.

That humidifier is to expensive for a 10 gallon aquarium. The reason for the coolmist is for automatic air exchange, not to keep the RH level up. The moist perlite in the bottom will take care of the RH, while the coomist on a timer will provide air exchange and some misting. Put the coolmist on for 15 minutes every 6 hours. Make sure the perlite stays nice and moist so you can maintain a high RH for cakes. It's just another way to make it simple for people that don't have time to maintain the tetarriums.
