Careers in Sociology/Anthropology
    #4443595 - 07/23/05 03:35 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I'm considering majoring in both or one of those fields, and I was wondering what sort of careers there are for people who have masters or doctoral degrees in those fields.

Any insights or feedback on those areas?

You have to get a Ph.D to use either one of those, along with many others like Psychology. So if you want to be a Ph.D and work hard in Anthropology, then go for it. If you want an easy degree, just leave school.

Hehe, yeah, I dunno though, I've always had a fascination with other cultures, both modern day and ancient. Maybe I really should pursue something in that field...hmmmmmm

Oh and thanks cap'n, money's always good

I changed my major to Psychology cause I like it, but I'm not sure..I almost regret it. I could have just gone to Barnes and Noble or something..learned Psych there. I'll never get a job like this.

Really? Why do you regret it?

I'm either going to major in psych, or now possibly anthro./socio.

Psychology is an up-and-coming field it seems really

Yeah, IF you get a Ph.D. I don't know where my priorities are right now. I've been an academic/nerd all my life. I don't even know what it's like to not be one. Maybe I'd be happier just getting a useful degree like Engineering and working hard, but not like a scientist.

Not that I wouldn't WANT a Ph.D in Psychology, but I don't know..that's a lot of work. I don't know if I want it that bad.

Are you joking? That is so cool!

Quantum physics is endlessly fascinating, but I was raised in a family too focused on physics to really consider pursuing it as a career for myself.

Tibetan, African, and Aboriginee cultures...I don't think you could have chosen some cooler cultures if you tried (although Central and Southern American ones do have a lot going for them).

Majoring in psychology is ridiculous. Besides it being easy and thought-less... they actually teach you nothing. Psychology is not science.

The reason there are so many psych degrees is because freshman year most kids have to take it regardless and they make it really easy, spout off some interesting experiments and general "ooo that's interesting" crap, and then you got 500 psych degree kiddies sophomore year.

Middle aged women around the country absolutely love the stuff and read enough self-help books to be an equivalent of a graduating psych major. Impressive stuff.

Well see, that can and will change in the coming years. We have a lot more technology that is capable of turning Psychology into a science. I'd say college freshman 20 years from now will no longer have the same psychology track that we do.

It sure is isn't it? I've always wondered about the similarities and differences between Tibetan mystics and South American brujos or medicine men.

Looner, yeah I suppose, but those are mostly just shit degrees, I mean there are people out there who are truly interested in the science of it, and who have a chance to really make a difference in people's lives. For instance, the neurosciences are remarkable, and provide such insight into human behavior and really everything that we do.

Are you familiar with African tribal rituals and such? I've recently become interested in their traditions but know next to nothing about them.
