Let's discuss inner monologue

I'm curious. Let's say I'm walking along, thinking of something. Almost all the time, if I'm thinking, I'll almost start making the words with my vocal chords. my throat will make the words. I won't say them, or move my mouth, but my inner monologue is being brought to a physical level by forming in my vocal chords. This leads me to talk to myself all the fucking time. If you were hiding in my car, and I got in and started driving, I'd probably scare you with the amount of self-talk. I creep myself out sometimes.

Yeah, well there are theories of thinking that say that some thought is formed on a sub-vocal level (what you described, where signals are sent to your vocal cords, but they don't necessarily vibrate enough to produce noise).
Our minds are amazing things!

"Belief is a beautiful armor But makes for the heaviest sword" - John Mayer Making the noise "penicillin" is no substitute for actually taking penicillin. "This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or their revolutionary right to dismember or overthrow it." -Abraham Lincoln

It helps me think faster. My girlfriend lived with someone who talked to herself all the time, so she hates that and thinks anyone who does that is crazy. I don't talk to myself much because that's pretty much everyone's opinion on that.

i always talk to myself while working - it's really funny actually.
i've noticed that i've also begun to think/talk-to-myself not just in english (which is my mother tongue), but also in danish and norwegian - since i very rarely speak english nowadays. makes for a confused jumbled mess in my head!

haha, that reminds me of a story my friend told.
he was tripping BALLS, and was with some people, i don't remember who. Apparently he was talking to this Korean guy, and the guy said "yeah, I think in Korean so it's hard for me to express myself easily while tripping.."
and my friend was like "YOU THINK IN KOREAN????" and it fucking blew his mind lol. I think if someone told me that while I was tripping, I would have gone crazy for a while. Cause that never occured to me really..people would think in their own languages..crazy

here's a twist on your topic....
what would our thoughts be liked if we never learned a structured language? Most people seem to think mainly in words of their chosen language.... what if there was no structure? Would our minds be chaos? Or would we be unchained by the limits imposed by a "structure" and so be infinitely more enlightened?
edit: didn't read fred's post before mine... but yah. Anyway.

What if I have an inner dialogue instead of a monologue?

I love and appreciate this inner dialogue. You can think whatever you want, you can have fun discipling your thoughts, picturing all sorts of amazing unlimited things and of course talking to yourself. I myself talk through things all the time by myself and its such wonderful mind therapy. I do it so much that I'll get into a thought and forget about others around me. It bugs me for some reason that people think its weird to talk to yourself. Isn't it only natural? lol.

I've often wondered if I'm mildly schizophrenic, as my inner monologue often talks to itself. Not as a diologue per se, but I feel like there's my inner monologue and my conscious mind, which take turns "monologuing". The weird part is that although they "sound" (in my head) exactly the same, I can always tell which part of me is voicing.
I swear I'm not crazy!

I guess it's only natural. It depends on how other people think to themselves? I honestly dont remember how much I used to talk to myself..I feel like my life started 2 years ago.

I think it would be quite random and simple. Not so complicated and structured with words. There's be alot more pictures involved and you'd have your own pattern of thinking.

talking to yourself is fine, the trouble starts when you start answering.
I read that somewhere....but I still do it all the time. I'm my own best friend really...no one understands or appreciates me the way I do

Yeah I don't do that. I do realize things better after talking about it but I don't ask myself things then answer. lol. That would be awkward.

ive heard of a study where some nuns in europe, i believe, took like ten children and were instructed to never speak to them to see how it would affect their development, to see whether they would be smarter or just plain dumb fuck animals. In the end, all of the children died before they turned five, none of them had ever had a word spoken to them in their life, it seems launguage, or at least some sort of intelligent communication is vital in human life
more on topic, i talk to myself quite regularly, mainly when i question my belief, like i say 'why do i think this', or, 'why do i think that' or 'why are people stupid' that sort of thing, sometimes i answer, i definately have two personalities, one that is more submissive and takes in everything it hears and one that lashes back and questions authority.. seems the latter is doin better right now
