Im Having a Hell of a Time...
    #4442524 - 07/23/05 11:19 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Installing Gentoo, I keep getting an error when I install the stage. The error basically reads.
tar: /usr/lib/local-archive: Wrote only 1024 of 10240 bytes
tar: skipping next header
tar: archive counting BLAH BLA BLAH Yetta yatta yatta :smirk:

Then it says it cant proceed.

Any idea whats wrong?

are you installing stage 3? are you installing it from the cd or from a mirror? did you remember all the arguements (xvfjp or whatever they are)?

Stage3 from CD,

first I type:
cd /mnt/gentoo
and hit enter.

then I type:
tar -xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/stages/stage3-athlon-xp-2005.0.tar.bz2
and hit enter.

Text scrolls down the screen for a period of time then I get the error messages.

A corrupt tarball or physical problem with the CD, maybe? Try downloading a stage from the net. You can do this during the installation by using the links2 browser. See the guide for the minimal install CD for details.

fire that up in links2 and just follow along. ctrl+alt+(F key) is how you have it up and work at the same time.

a stage is the foundation of the operating system. diffent stages are different levels of prebuilt os. a stage one would be very little copiled for you already so you can set it up to run the fastest and most efficient on ur computer. a stage 3 would be a more general version of the os that will work on more computers. for example, Windows XP would be like a stage 5. it works on all computers. the reason gentoo allows users to start with a more basic stage is so you can tailor it to your system. Windows Xp has most everything it needs to run on a Dell celeron 750 MHz computer. but it also has everything it needs to run on a home built AMD sempron 3000+. the point is, why install all the things needed to run a multitude of hardware when you just have what you have. it just makes bloat and things load slower.

so, after writing 512 it stops... hmmmm. check ur partitions and make sure they are the correct size. also, make sure you chroot correctly.

also, a tip for someone that has installed gentoo many times, when you set up your root as ext3, dont forget to add -t ext3 when you are setting up that file system on /dev/hda3 (or however you have it setup).

Ok, the error message is being generated because you are out of disk space in the location that you are trying to extract the archive. Lets try to figure out what is going on here.

Lets start by looking at your disks. Get to the point where you would type "cd /mnt/gentoo" and instead type "df -ka" and post your results. This will be a list of all your local mount points and will help us figure out what exactly "/mnt/gentoo" is and help figure out what is going wrong. You might also try 'fdisk -l' (that is a lowercase L "el", not a 1 "one") and give us that output as well.

thats what i was getting at, seuss. either he is mounting gentoo in the wrong place or he messed up the partitioning.

i'll reinstall gentoo tonight on a new box and see if i can notice where he messed up.

picture of partitions as P-magic sees them

i did df -ka but their was allot of stuff to wright. if its needed to figure out whats wrong I will wright it up, but I did fdisk -l and got this info with the partition I'm trying to install gentoo on:
Code:

device boot start end blocks id
/dev/hdb3 662 1169 4080510 83

You have to tell us the output of the "df" command because we have to see where /dev/hdb3 is mounted, and what other filesystems might be mounted as well. The partition seems right, but I'm not sure you have it mounted and chrooted correctly. It looks like you're installing the stage into a ramdisk or something.

Are you sure you made /mnt/gentoo, cd'ed into it, and chrooted exactly as in the guide?

I did not create /mnt/gentoo it was already there. I have read nothing about this in the guide

But ok I will get the results from df -ka

That's what it looks like just before you try to untar? Then yes, something is wrong. You don't have /dev/hdb3 mounted. You can't have cd'ed into /mnt/gentoo successfully because there's nothing there. Did you do the:
mount /dev/hdb3 /mnt/gentoo command just like that? If so, did it work? If it gave you an error while doing that command, tell us what the error was.

(And ignore what I said about chrooting in the previous post, because I realize now that you're not supposed to be on that part yet. Oops.)

> when I type cd /mount/gentoo it goes there

When you "mount a device" in unix, you attach the device to the filesystem at the "mount point". In windows, you have drive "c:" and drive "d:", but unix doesn't work this way. In unix, you have devices... instead of "c:" you have "/dev/hda1" (as an example, hda1 might be different on your machine).

In windows, "c:" is a file system that you can go into, but in unix, "/dev/hda1" is simply a device, not a file system. In order to access the filesystem represented by the device, you must first mount the device onto a mount point that is located in your existing filesystem.

A mount point is a directory. When you type "mount /dev/hdb3 /mnt/gentoo" you are telling the system to remap the directory "/mnt/gentoo" with the filesystem located on the device "/dev/hdb3". Now when you change directory to "/mnt/gentoo" you are really going to the root directory "/" of the filesystem located on "/dev/hdb3".

What we are seeing from the "df -ka" command is that the device "/dev/hdb3" never got mounted. When you "cd /mnt/gentoo" you are going into the mount point, which is simply an empty directory on a ramdisk (virtual disk created out of RAM). When you untar the image, you are untarring to the ramdisk, not to your hard drive.

If you manage to mount your hard drive to /mnt/gentoo, then instead of going into an empty directory on the ramdisk, you will go into the root directory of the filesystem on your hard drive.

There is a good chance that there is no filesystem located on /dev/hdb3 which is why the mount is failing. I am assuming that you are trying to mount /dev/hdb3 and it is giving an error.

from this picture in an above post http://www.shroomery.org/forums/files/05-30/230616642-pmagic.jpg
i am going to guess that the hard drive he is trying to install gentoo on is the slave of the second IDE controller. if you look at it, it starts as the K:\ drive. and, the first partition is the ntfs partition, so, if he wants to keep the ntfs partition and if following the partitioning design in the gentoo handbook, your fstab will resemble something like this:
Quote:

/dev/hdd2 /boot
/dev/hdd3 /swap
/dev/hdd4 /

now, this assumes that your second hard drive is slaved off your second IDE controller on your motherboard. maybe you have a configuration like this?:

IDE1: (M)hard drive / (S)dvd rom
IDE2: (M)cdrw / (S)hard drive

in linux, that would look like this:

IDE1: (M)hda / (S)hdb
IDE2: (M)hdc / (S)hdd

make sure you are calling your hard drive location propperly when you set your mount points.

in an above example, the reason i started your linux partitions at hdd2 is because what would be the hdd1 partition is NTFS.

hope this helps get you back on track, if not, maybe it helped someone else in here, heh.

My ide chain is like this

IDE1: (M)hard drive / (S)hard drive
IDE2: (M)dvdrw

Would it help if I moved the Linux partition in front of the ntfs partition?

That shouldn't be necessary at all. Your root is /dev/hdb3 and you don't have a boot partition, so /boot will just be a directory in the root filesystem. This is not a problem. The problem is, it's not getting mounted before you try to install the stage.

If
mount /dev/hdb3 /mnt/gentoo
isn't working, I'd like to know why. Please post the error message if there is one.

The fact that you can cd into /mnt/gentoo means nothing at this point, because if you don't mount the drive under it, /mnt/gentoo will just be an empty directory in the ramdisk. By mounting it, you put the hard drive in that directory.
