Help...BFR jars
    #4441377 - 07/23/05 02:15 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Hey guys, i need your help.

So yesterday I finally had the alone time to sterilize my jars. I put tinfoil over them and pressure cooked them for one hour on 15 psi...etc. Then I let them cool overnight but with the tinfoil on them. I'm not sure if that was a mistake or not. My question to you guys is, do your BFR jars smell a little sour..cause mine sure do, and some of them let in a little moisture so the top verm looks very wet, is that okay or should i throw them? Alot of them look great and dry but still smell a little sour. I have over 50 jars and I am innoculating them now. Thanks for all the help.

Hard to tell after only one day.

You say you put tin foil over the jars. Did you also use a lid with ring?

Ohh yes, I used the lid with the ring, 1/2 pint wide mouthed jars. I used and fallowed the tec as it said. The only thin i am worried about is if i was suppsoed to leave the tinfoil on whle they cooled or if it does not matter. Also, if the jars are supposed to smell a little. The tinfoil built up some water inside so some jars look a little wet inside..and i am not sure if i should use them.

Been a while since I've done PF jars, so I don't know about the smell, but you should be fine. I don't see leaving the tinfoil on being a problem.

I've never smelled the jars, because I don't open them after I sterilize. And the verm layer needs to stay dry as a way of defending contams. Wet verm on top could penitently harbor nasty stuff in the future.GL. :gd_icon: :eyeball:

i think you are supposed to tighten the lids and remove the tinfoil as soon as they have cooled down enough to touch.
