HELP ID PLEASE - PANN SUBS?!??
    #4419615 - 07/18/05 03:15 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Possible Pann subs?  I found these growing in front lawns today, and also alongside the roadway of a well-known and gigantic golf course in Maryland. I took spore prints of the ones I found and it is jet black as shown in the pictures.  Can I eat these bitches??

EDIT:
Habitat: Found growing in the grass right next to a golf course along the roadside. (The golf course stretches across the road).

Gills: black, ?, ?

Characteristics of the stem: Ranging from about an inch to a half an inch long, very skinny, brown stems brusing browner, hollow, thin (they are not fully developed; seems like the sun+heat kills them after a while.. it was 92 degrees today.)

Cap: Less than a half inch wide, brown with rings, conical

Spore print: Unmistakeably jet black

Color that the mushroom bruises: seems to be a darker brown

Frank,

You should wait for more than a second opinion, you should wait for a valued opinion.
also look here.

Well of course, and yea, why is it that people have stopped giving the ID we ask? btw thank you for putting it in, and after reading it...yea some are subbs. but mikonn was right on the money, a bag of lbm's is just a bag of lbm's haha, but I see at least one or two definite subbs...Separate them into piles by description
Take care!

Maryland. Sorry about the pictures, I have a lot more better ones but geocities is horrible for storing images. If someone could recommend something better, it would be most appreciated.

Looks more like feonisecii to me. Two years ago I worked at a golf course in northern new england. In early summer we layed mulch down around shrubs and flowers throughout the golf course. The mulch came in one large pile and before we used it I noticed a musty smell and lots of mycelium running through it. About 2 weeks after laying the mulch down mushrooms began growing. As it turns out the whole golf course was covered with subbs. Subbalteatus tend to be a bit larger, the caps open up more with age and there seems to be more of that zone effect(drier mushrooms don't show zoning as much). Also you will notice a mottled appearance on the gills when looked at from the side. All in all it is very similar in apearance to Feonisecii but you will know the difference when you have found both mushrooms a few times.

I have never found Subbs, but I think I have a good idea of what signs to look for. The mushrooms in those pictures look excactly what I have seen in the many many Panaaeolina Foenisecii I have wandered across in my never ending hunt to gourmet and phycoactive mushrooms.

I see no Panaeolus subbalteatus in your collection Frank. We need a better description and possibly some organization.

Yea that one he's holding isn't a subb, but the biggest one in the first pic, 4Th one from the left, it strikes me as a subb, maybe I'm wrong but doesn't that appear to be one? but o ya, better organization is definitely required!
Take care
