I did it!!!! sort of...help.
    #4439715 - 07/22/05 09:44 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

OK I got 2, 1pint jars. they are about 90% colonized just like the very bottom is not done. I flipped the jars and that helped but I am getting inpatient, Can I just cut this part off and fruit? I know some of you will get mad me saying "I'M getting inpatient" but I have lost 2 myco bags and a SHAKER because it took to long to colonize and got contaminated. So.... I was wanting to cut the bottom off and dunk/roll in verm. Should I or Could I roll the whole cake in verm?

2 jars of what?
how long have they been colonizing?
you can cut the bottom off and go ahead and dunk and roll or case it. spawning it would be much more beneficial though.

oh the jars are (I THINK) pf tek. I bought them. they have been colonizing for 1 month I would say, maybe Little less then that. How would I cut the bottom off safely? Also what if I cut the bottom off and the myc has not colonized the center yet?

Take care

is it better to fruit the whole pf cake? I think I read some where that if you cut it in half then it would fruit more? Is this right?

sterilize a knife and a counter top and cut away. i would say your best bet would be to crumble and case them though.
cutting it in half would not necessarily give you more fruit. you still have the same surface area for fruiting by just cutting it in half.
i agree with beta about trying to wait it out if you can, if not i think your best bet is to cut off the uncolonized portion and case it. imo that is.
good luck

you can sterilize with bleach and water at a 200 ppm concentration or just use an alcohol lamp and some alcohol on cotton balls to wipe it down after you flame it.
you could case it with just verm, but i would go with say a 50/50 tek or something similar. like say jiffy mix (seed starting mix).
peace

I'll read up on easy casing. I don't understand what 200ppm?

200 ppm means 200 parts per million. It's a ration, although, i couldnt tell you what it is.

200 parts per million of bleach to water. 200 mg of bleach to 1 liter of water will give you about what you want.
yeah read some teks and see what will work best for you.

Procedure:

Follow PF Tek or MMGG method until you have a fully colonized cake.
Wet vermiculite and put in sterilizing container, sterilize and let cool.
Sterilize fruiting container and let cool.
Add 1/2" (1cm) or more vermiculite layer to bottom of fruiting container.
Crumble or leave cake whole over bottom layer.
Cover cake with damp, sterilized vermiculite (note: some growers suggest leaving crumbled cake without casing until it starts to grow mycelium again (24+ hours))
Cover fruiting container with foil or plastic wrap, poke holes in covering.
Let stand.

That is a casing procedure. Well I have a few questions.

1. How do you sterilize a fruiting container?
2. How long do you put the verm in the microwave for?
3. What should I use for a fruiting container?
4. How would I add the jiffy mix? I'm a little confused with this one? Should I just case it with jiffy mix and not verm?

1. use alcohol or the bleach/water dilution.
2. oh a few minutes at a time for 5 to 10 mins should cover it.
3. best would be some small rubber or plastic tub or you can use the foil baking pans.
4. you would use the jiffy mix as the casing layer (just on top). you can use the moist verm on the bottom but i am not sure if it is necessary. although it will absorb any water that will pool into the bottom of the tub.

i have read that you will get better results using something other than just verm as a casing layer.

good luck

Ok so, just substitute the verm on top for the jiffy mix. Is this right? Do you get "more" or better mushrooms from this casing as apposed to just fruiting the cake with verm on it?

Should I dunk, then crumble it, then case it?

just do a 50/50 mix using peat moss/vermiculite. mix the two together, then add water until it is at field capacity (drips only when you squeeze it).

nuke for 5 minutes in a microwaveable container, close immediately upon removing so it doesn't get stuff in it, then let it sit to cool and then use it

later, once you get that down (or now evev) you can add a bit of crushed oyster shell and then a tiny bit of ground chalk to make the ph come down and give more/better flushes.

Here's a decent recipe

4.5 cups verm
4.5 cups peat moss
1.3 cups oyster shell
.3 cups ground white chalk
4.25 cups distilled water

never tried just verm. there have been several posts about using something more than just verm and getting better results. the verm by itself has a tendancy to dry out very quickly. whereas peat moss and verm mixed hold water for a longer period.
use the jiffy mix on top instead of the verm or you can mix a little verm in with the jiffy mix and use that as your casing layer.
peace
