What contams can and cant you work with?
    #4439681 - 07/22/05 09:38 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Some background on my friends situation:

So lately my friend has been really really frusterated. He is awesome at casing (no contammed casings to date out of maybe 20 he has done...) and has gotten pretty proficient at grain spawn. He uses rye grain, he has tried all different methods of preparation, both soak/simmer and water-grain at the same time, but no matter WHAT at about 70% colonization there is always some strange looking contam of some sort. It's never big green or black mold its always these stupid little pink dots or a tiny bit of browning on the kernels which is probably brown mold, but is so minute that its hard to tell if its a contam at all. My friends jars will ALL colonize to 100% in under two weeks, usually about 12 days or so to 100% and look healthy with some rhizomorphic growth.

The problem:

When my friend cases his jars they colonize, pin RIDICULOUSLY, 100's of pins all over the surface, and then they don't grow. So basically my friend is thinking... the only concievable reason why his shit isn't working out is bacterial contam or some other sort of unforseen contam that is stopping them from fruiting.

The question:

My question is, what can you work with for contams? The contams my friend gets don't seem to matter AT ALL during colonization, his shit eats through it but then when it comes to fruiting something isn't working... are contams known to totally stop mushroom maturation? Is this most likely a contam problem or something else? And should you always throw out a contaminated jar of spawn ALL THE TIME even if you are just casing it and not using it for LC's or spawn masters or something like that?

I put up a post THIS long and no one has anything to say =( Maybe I should refrase it:

What contams can/can't you work with in terms of grain culture being cased directly? If the substrate is contammed minorly with a brown mold or something, not acute trich or something relaly nasty, can you usually work with them? And also more specifically what contams usually interfere with fruiting?

Molds in general are all nasty. They create enzymes which stunt the competition. The enzymes are suspected cancer causers in a lot of cases, are heat resistant and a pain, effects are long term. The main problem is your crop does not grow well. Get control of the mold situation.
Sometimes you will get orange dots on the myc (in the jar, early on), which goes away and appears ok. Try setting a jar aside after each stage of the process, see where the mold starts.

Yeah I need to tell my friend to to run some experiments to solve the controversy. Scientific method usually prevails.

Well about the only thing you can really do is before the next batch clean our your chamber really good and filter the air...all of it that enters the area the shrooms are growing.

Now as far as working with contams that just isn't gonna happen but I think you know that. I've had this happen way back in the day and man I know just how pissed you are but all you can do is keep trying.

Wanna get a little more drastic only work on anything in front of a flow hood if ya can get one or make one.

Yea a flow hood would really do it, just keep a constant air stream going away from your jars at all times. but yea you can't really work with a contam and once it's in one, it will spread, and it's spreading around your house, and the others get it, and it's just a mess. That's why I always tell people to isolate something even if it's probably nothing because if it is something you'll wish you had done that before. But keep working at it, it's a great hobby!
Take care
