Does anyone have any birds for pets? Which species would you recommend? Any way to avoid them dropping shit when you let them loose from the cage? Any information about pet birds would be helpful.

I had society finches. They were lovely to look at and had a beautiful sweet little chirp, but finches are mostly only interested in other finches, not their human owners.

If I had unlimited resources I would get a Hyacinth macaw. They are incredibly beautiful, extremely personable, and they talk! However they need a lot of room and a lot of socialization to turn into good birds. If you want a bird with a hands-off approach, you probably won't find owning a macaw very rewarding.

African Grey's are pretty rad.

I've owned a couple Cockatoo's in the past, they're pretty good talkers too.

African Greys are very beautiful.  They have some at the local pet store and I always find myself spending much more time in the store than I need to.

I would go for a budgie (aka parakeet).  They are great little birds and you can teach them how to talk as well.  Teach them different whistles and such but of course you need to spend an abundance of time with them in order to do so.

Whistling with parakeets is fun as hell, same with cockatiels, and I'm fairly certain it's possible for cockatiels to talk, even.
