U.N. Panel to U.S.: Let Go of Internet

U.N. Panel to U.S.: Let Go of Internet

July 19, 2005 6:49PM

The United Nations' Working Group on Internet Governance -- WGIG -- released a report this week that says U.S. control of the Internet's technical underpinnings should end.

A U.N. panel says the United States should give up control of the core functions of the Internet -- a position the United States has already rejected.
The United Nations' Working Group on Internet Governance -- WGIG -- released a report this week that says U.S. control of the Internet's technical underpinnings should end.

However, the panel failed to agree on a future governance structure and put forward four alternatives, the BBC reported.

The alternatives will be discussed Nov. 16-18 at the U.N. World Summit on the Information Society in Tunis, Tunisia.

The United States beat the WGIG panel to the punch with its late June announcement that it intends to "maintain its historic role in authorizing changes or modifications" to the master file of domain names controlled by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.

The U.S. Commerce Department has veto power over more than 250 top-level domains, such as ".com "and ".net," even though the Internet's 13 root servers are private

If I was in charge things in the U.S., I would immediately withdraw from the U.N.

Absolutely. It's long overdue. I have no idea why the US remains a part of that shameful and shameless travesty of an organization.

The U.N. is kept around (so to speak) for the same reason you might keep certain tools around that you seldom use. It is recognized that they can come in handy to serve certain ends.

The politicos should stop fucking around and let the private companies the actually run the networks that form the Internet get on with it. Politicians add very little to the Internet, they just want to meddle and make themselves more important.

I think the eventual solution will come when computers become common in automobiles.

If 1 in 10 cars had a computer set up with wireless networking, every major road would become a massive network/pipeline not unlike the internet itself except that it will be owned mostly by individuals instead of large companys, and the government will have no power to regulate it.

That is unless they plan on spending billions of money pulling people over for hosting illegal files.
