Simple Salvia Air-layering [PICs]
    #4437122 - 07/22/05 08:43 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Have you noticed that if the humidity is extremely high ,salvia starts to form roots at the lower nodes?

Noticing this, One idea crossed my mind?

I cleared a node from a branch and I wrapped it with a wet paper. I kept it constantly wet.
( In order not to loose humidity I wrapped them with some nylon as well)

I expected it to form roots after a week.
When I opend it I didn?t see any roots.

Yesterday I did the same thing using some rooting hormone.
I?m gona open it in a week.

Why do you want it to root from the stem?

Mainly for experiments sake!

Apart from that there are a few advantages:

*Even if rooting does not go well, you don?t loose a branch

*The transplanting shock is smaller.

That could make a very efficient method of making cuttings!

PLUS:

if it works , you can make cuttings from quite small branches!

Have you considered using wet peat moss inside a seran wrap film? Stays moist longer. I do a type of air layering with the salvia plants. i bend branches to the soil and place rocks on the stem. Normaly in a few weeks its rooted.

Nice idea.
I just tried the wet paper cauz it looks simpler.
It doesn?t need moistening more than twice per week
If it doesn?t work I?ll try wrapped peat moss.

Actually what you Described is the original Layering method. (not air lay)

I noticed that too and tried to do something simaler. I used some of those small papper cups and slit it down the side and onto the bottom putting a square hole in the center of the botom. After slipping on the branch at the node I closed the slit with some tape and filled with soil. Added a little plastic around the top to hold in moisture. It didn't realy work for me though. I thought it could have but I got distracted durring that time and was not able to keep up with watering and such.

Good luck.

Hum I made cutlings from saliva that where very very small and they where sucessfully rooted. You just have to be patient for them to root, and they may go droppy for more then just one day before they recover. I find much more probelms in the transfer from a rooted clone to soil, that shock is the worst to saliva.

DId you try to put inside the wet paper some rootone ?
I am expecting the branch to rot. I really don't understand why it will make roots.
Although I hope for the oposite.

Since it?s my first attempt I don?t really know if it?s going to work.
I?ve seen it happening to some other plants ,so why not?

I do it mainly for experiments sake. Normal cloning should be easier!

Think of it like that Tinkal. When you take a cutting, that is cut a branch, what is the procedure you follow? Usually you put it in some water to form roots, right?

If you dont give it water or put it in a moist medium then it will not form roots. Still, when in the water it wont rot,so why would it rot now?

Salvia lives in a climate with high RH ,i cant see a way it will rot. Furthermore rooting hormone on the branch will hasten hopefully the procedure plus it might have other effects if we think that it gets absorbed and transported in the plant.
