i've only read about this topic, but it would not be my first choice of action. i would rather use no casing layer over potting soil.

what kind of potting soil did you have in mind?
jiffy mix works fine for casing, but not as substrate.
there are other brands that work too.
look for seed starter. check the ingredients, to make sure no fertilizer is added.
have heard jiffy mix+ will work, but i haven't tried it.

but honestly I have no idea if it'd work or not.

anyone care to chime in?

There are not supposed to be nutrient is casings!!! Dirt should have verm or something in it, so it doesn't turn to mud.. (Stamets uses dirt in TMC, but he mixes stuff into it, like sand and PH biffers)

In the past ive had success with Miracle Gro Moisture Control potting soil, pasturized. It has the time released fertilizer pellets in it, they will burn mycellium so you would have to sift them out(PITA).

But it did work, had a slight problem with overlay but it worked.
If you decide to use it, take out all the woody pieces and pellets.

Take care n be safe...

PS...Only used as a casing substitute.
PSS... I would also suggest mixing it 60/40 soil to verm. To help prevent overlay.

you wouldn't see the point!~

you don't use horse poo for casing material.

horse poo is a bulk substrate.

please do some reading before trying to give people advice...

especially on subjects that you know nothing about!~

Great information there Dean. Seed starters are great, along with Jiffy and Sunshine mixes. Add some vermiculite or coir for a texture buffer as well. 60/40 soil to vermiculite or coir. The soils have ph buffers included into the mix also.
