Cake sitting directly on perlite?

I did this for a few cakes in a small ice-cream bucket terrarium. The cakes starting to pin from the bottom, that is, where they were sitting directly on the perlite. Is there a negative effect with any shrooms that may be laying on the perlite or fruiting under a cake that is sitting on perlite (under the cake on the perlite so you cant see it). If I didnt want to use jar lids to stop the cakes from sitting on the perlite what is a goot thing to use. I am considering the double ended casing tek next time. I current have no mushrooms fruiting on the side of the cakes, weird!

phrozendata:
My freind puts her cakes directly on the wet perlite layer of her terrarium and she also notices that most of her pins/fruits form from around the bottom (where the cake meets the perlite layer) She hasn't noticed any negative effects on the mushrooms themselves though. They all grow up to be big healthy fruits. She has had a small portion of them appear from the sides, but never the top of the cakes, weird. I know it does have a positive effect in the way that it keeps your cakes hydrated and will keep them flushing for months to come. I've heard that too much water obsorbed in the cakes will cause water logged shrooms but my freind hasn't experienced this ...

The weird that that I would like to point out, and also emphasize, is that the mushrooms grew below, not on side, of the cakes. I had to flip them over so they were on the top.

phrozendata: the shrooms do start growing from below, but you don't need to flip the cake. they will simple grow out and emerge from the side.

Japher- will they grow out even if they are literally under the cake? Two of my cakes are only pinning under neath where they are touching the perlite. Some how they decided to fruit where there was no light at all. I'm guessing they chose to do this because it was more humid under the cake? (my aquarium humidity is always above 95% though...)

I put my cased cakes on the perlite, I have also had mushies sprout at the bottom also. I don't think it's negative but I could be wrong lol.

The perlite is wet to provide humidity, and if the cake is sitting directly on it, mycelium will penetrate into the perlite, saturating the cake. For some reason, mycelium will soak up all the available water, even if doing so is suicidal. RR

Do not put them on perlite!
